In the picture, we see the lander is 25 pixels in height, while the two peaks are 52 and 49, making it around twice the apparent height in the image. However, since it's behind the lander, it obviously must be larger.

If anything, the presence of an atmosphere distorts the image. Air molecules will slightly disrupt the photons on the way to your eye. An extreme variation of this effect is observable during a hot day in a city or desert. During a hot day in New York City, the emissions from cars will noticeably distort your vision, and the effect is the scene in front of you appearing to "wobble" a little bit. This is because the heat excites the air molecules and thus increases the probability of collision between photons and air molecules. It's often referred to as a lensing effect.

In any case, you'll get the clearlest possible picture in a vacuum, because the photons aren't colliding with anything. You'd have to be a complete moron to think that a vacuum actually distorts an image. However, for practical purposes, the atmosphere has a very negligible effect on your perceptions most of the time.
