In a debate on a French ST forum, I asked which race built the safest, best ships ( from a fiability/logic/engineering POV, technological disparities notwithstanding ).
One trekkie ( with a Vulcan avatar ) argued ( amongst other bs ) that my poll was illogical because :
1) crews made the difference in Trek ( which has IMHO nothing to do with the thread, and I told him that - but he didn't seem to get it )
2) there were "no ship with a better design for fire arcs, safety and systems' fiability"
Now I would need your opinion on this, and I would especially appreciate if Mike bothered to make a reply like those he's famous for - style, punch and logic. I would love to quote it.
For those of you who understand French : the website and the thread. The Trekkie's pseudo is Merek, and mine is GSV Eschatologist.

That is a red-herring. The intrinsic design flaws of a ship are not affected by the skill of the crew in overcoming those weaknesses. In fact, the best ship would require the least intervention from the crew to continue operating. The fact that Fed crews must constantly kludge around system problems is hardly a compliment to the designers. The Nomad wrote:In a debate on a French ST forum, I asked which race built the safest, best ships ( from a fiability/logic/engineering POV, technological disparities notwithstanding ).

Circular logic. He is trying to prove that the ships are safe by simply saying that they are safe. That is not evidence. I have countless examples of poor Federation ship design in my database, and he can't counteract them by simply saying "they're the safest".2) there were "no ship with a better design for fire arcs, safety and systems' fiability"

In A.D. 2101
Poke was beginning.
<<POKE!!>>
N00b: What happen ?
Mechanic: Somebody set up us the Poke
Operator: We get signal
N00b: What !
Operator: Main screen turn on
N00b: It's You !!
E. Sn0 -=31337=-: HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN !!
E. Sn0 -=31337=-: ALL YOUR POKE ARE BELONG TO US
E. Sn0 -=31337=-: YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO DESTRUCTION
N00b: What you say !!
E. Sn0 -=31337=-: YOU HAVE NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME
E. Sn0 -=31337=-: HA HA HA HA ....
N00b: Take off every 'Zig'
N00b: You know what you doing
N00b: Move 'Zig'
N00b: For great justice
Anyway with that out of the way, I think the most intelligently designed Trek ship is the Imperial Star Destroyer.

Malheureusement pour toi, the debate was not about who would win, but which ship was the best.Merek wrote:I never say this !The Nomad wrote:2) there were "no ship with a better design for fire arcs, safety and systems' fiability"

If I had to vote, I'd say "any ship except the Feds". You don't need any engineer geniuses in Klingon, Romulan or Cardassian ships to keep them running at minimum safe conditions.
But thinking about it, Feds don't need them either. I think the ships in the shows are really really jinxed. No ships suffer *technobabble containment failures* off-screen
Kiss the Spock-monkey!
