Whats that sound, Timmy?

Post by MKSheppard »

It's the sound of trektard claims of manual targetting for Starfighters
going down in flames!
Rebel Sourcebook Chapter 5: Starfighters wrote: Combat Targeting Computer

The advanced tactical targeting com-
puter employed by Alliance starships is
designed to augment the pilot's firing skill.
It takes only a small fraction of a second for
a skilled pilot to center his sights upon his
target and pull the trigger and an equally
short time for his weapons to energize and
fire, but, given the high speeds of modern
starfighters, his target could have moved
right out of his sights. Targeting comput-
ers compensate for the delay, charting the
speed and course of the target and firing
just slightly ahead of the point at which the
pilot aims.

When firing manually, the pilot must
judge these things for himself. This is an
extremely difficult skill to master, particu-
larly with high-speed, quick-turning tar-
gets such as the Imperial TIE Interceptor.
A pilot who can judge the angle of deflec-
tion
by eye without the aid of a targeting
computer is a skilled flyer, indeed.

What? Who would say that??

I mean, remember ANH

"Luke, you switched off your targetting computer. What's wrong?"

"Nothing, I'm all right."

Durr, of course they have Combat Targeting Computers.

"Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? It's the sound of inevitability."

Anyways, pulling this thread back on topic. That seems pretty dumb for someone to claim Star Wars fighters don't have targeting computers. Next time I'd recommend watching the movies.

Strange, the most notable Anderson here never did recocgnise the sound of inevitability.

And on topic, how the fuck could anyone imagine a fighter, in space, where they have targeting computers, not having one. words fail to describe the depths of this stupidity.

Well, old ASVS hands have seen it happen, so don't be so shocked

I think it's rather dishonesty, or getting so caught up in the moment that you're just not thinking, or simple ignorance (from not having experience from the material). I find it hard to believe a person would actually claim that because they were so incredibly dense as to not understand the meaning of "targeting computer" and then try to enter a debate forum and claim that it was never uttered in the first place.

There is a better Example from ANH!

Luke is targeting a tie fighter to kill it. It shows a graphic of the Tie inside of some cross hairs. when the graphic gets into the center Luke fires and hits the Tie

Darth Vader is targeting a X-Wing(this happens more than once) the movie shows a graphics of a X-wing on his consol(HUD) then it gets to the center and flashes and beeps. Vader fires and the lasers track off center to hit the X-Wing killing it.

Did they even think to look at the little mobile computer behind Luke called R2?

Could R2 act as a targeting computer if it failed. I already know that he does the hyperspace calcs and some of the navigation.

It's plaisible. Though I can garantee that it would not be as good as the original Targeting Computer

That'll work, but the accuracy will definitely be reduced.

As for the R2 thing, it could work....but it wouldnt be as good...or why bother with the targeting computer in the first place?

The AOTC novelization specifically mentions a class of astromech designed to improve targeting/handle the guns of certain starfighters (because its difficult for the pilot to do both) - Jedi did not need this kind of droid because of their abilities (which gives us a pretty good indication of comparative abilities, or what these droids are expected to do.)

The canon novelization for ANH repeatedly mentions automated/computerized targeting for both capital ships and fighters, as well as computerized/electronic prediction gear.

Well, hopefully some Trekkers will see this thread, and learn from their mistakes. (I used the phrase 'Trekkers', because a Trektard most likely wouldn't learn from their mistake.

In the X-Wing books there seems to be some colabouration between the Targeting COmputer and the Astromech. Several times we hear Whistler, Corran Horns R2, making the target lock sound when he is using Proton Torps.

Well, dunno. And it's not just seen in the debates, either.
And the Beast came forth surrounded by a roiling cloud of vengeance, and lo, he wrote:The Imperial Star Destroyer swung about, every weapon blazing as it lumbered in towards its target. The Miranda class USS Memphis dodged to one side and down, slipping under most of the barrage as her own phasers returned the fire, slicing through the armour of her attacker.
On the bridge of the Federation ship the Executive officer checked his console for the tenth time in as many minutes, still hardly able to believe what he was seeing. The deck was shuddering occasionally as a turbolaser bolt slammed home on the shields. "These guys can't shoot to save their lives," he said wonderingly. "Haven't they heard of computer targeting?"
"Aft torpedoes fire," Captain Pellman said. "Full phasers too." She watched the viewscreen tactical display as the two glowing flecks of light closed on the Star Destroyer, slamming into an already damaged section. "Apparently not," she said in response as the colossus began to spin out of control, still spraying turbolaser fire in their general direction. "Helm, evasive pattern alpha five three. Tactical, another full load on the same area."
The Memphis dodged and weaved as it arced around and raced inward again. Phasers and photon torpedoes leapt out and ploughed into the gaping hole in the Star Destroyer's port side; the whole forward section began to shear away from the rest of the ship. Both sections continued to fire.

What's up with all these "evasive patterns"?? Shouldn't somebody have already memorized all these (4 or 5) evasive patterns the feds use? Specially since most of them involve just sitting there and do absofuckinlutely nothing

Never mind, I forgot fed ships can't even be piloted manually, other than inputing coordinates into some spreadsheet or selecting maneuvring presets. That's why most trekkies were outraged that the E-E had a joystick.

lol, Perhaps I should re-write than fic...

The USS Statesman came out of high warp, straight into range of the powerful ISD. "Red alert!" The captain yelled as the ship began to dodge incoming fire, within seconds the schilds had failed and the ship span out of control, fire burning from holds in the deck. The last thing her cpatin saw, was the blue streck of a photon torp heading towards the bridge.
Meanwhile On board the ISD, the captain was haveing breckfast, unawere of his ship even entreing conbate, due to the fact, it wasn't belived nessasary to rase schilds when dealing with these rather primative ships...

Much better...
