I don't see why they couldn't, and judging by your name, I can take a guess at who you'd be rooting for ;)

But it's difficult to compare comic universes with ones like SW or ST, mainly because comics rely so heavily on magic.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Yes, until Darth Wong says otherwise, 'soft' sci-fi comics are acceptable.

what would "hard" sci-fi comics be?
It is not well for one to trifle in the affairs of the ancient Chinese generals, for they have a tendency to send armies of tens of thousands of warriors after those who challenge them.

Heh... the first person to come up with calcs on Shi'ar weaponry gets a gold star. I know that their FTL travel puts almost all but the "instantaneous transport" crowd to shame, crossing at least 2,000,000 lightyears in a matter of minutes (as per X-Men Unlimited #5).

cant remember.. it was either in Rom annual issue #4 (where ROm and the spaceknight squadron fought the shiar), or one of the old x-men issues between 150-166..

it was mentioned that the old shiar capital ship models, the ones that look like bugs, were capable of/demonstrated the ability to shatter planets..

in a more recent issue of the x-men, where prof x and others got kidnapped by skrulls, the starjammers ship's secondary weapons managed to penetrate the core of a planet... dunno how big the planet was though.
