Jocks, Stones, and Glass Houses.
I'm sure everybody here has, at one point, been browsing this site and had somebody come along and say 'Wow, that's pretty geekish' or something similar.
But does anybody else find this a tad hypocritical coming from people who commit basketball player's vital statistics to memory, and can tell you exactly what happened in last month's game? I mean, shit, I like Star Wars...but there's no way I could tell you the entire damn script of 'A New Hope', or rattle off a list of Mark Hamill's films, or something like that.....

It's the subject matter they take as geeky, not the fact that we pay so much useless attention to detail.
Besides which, people calling us all geeks are, obviously, morons themselves. Our population consists of a rediculously varied selection of cultures, professions, and ages.

Geekish usually refers to scientific or technical interests (Mr. Wong's site is exremely geekish), so technically it's not hypocritical, as such sports fans are not geeks. If it was meant in a derogatory manner, it's still not hyporcritical as much as simply wrong: the underlying assumption is that such interests are somehow worse than ones like memorizing sports statistics. Personally, I think overall it is the other way around.Ryoga wrote:I'm sure everybody here has, at one point, been browsing this site and had somebody come along and say 'Wow, that's pretty geekish' or something similar.

I get pissed off when people think 'uh oh, sci-fi fan, he must have no social life!' Never mind that I follow football and F1 motor racing, go to the gym, have never been to a major sci-fi convention, and have an active social life.

Any area where utter morons have not prevailed or been successful is a "geeky" area. So, things like science, math and information technology are automatically geeky. However, things like the music industry, Hollywood and sports have seen utter morons become successful; just look at the rap genre, The Core and the entirety of the Dallas Cowboys, respectively.

Hypocritical yes...I mean my uncles follow sports(okay American Football and Baseball...but have heavy knowledge in the other arenas) religously, and try playing a bit. Heck my nephews think I'm a tad geeky(more because of my glasses...given I could whoomp them) because I like comics and Star Wars...then I remind them, that I don't remember the exact second by second of every Super Bowl and honestly how is that any less geeky then me remembering about 50-60 years worth of comic lore.

I should point out that Vin Diesel played D&D for 24 years before he made it big. Draw your own conclusions.

And now he's reading the script for Silver Surfer. So he's gone from D&D to Superstardom, back to comic book geekdom.Alferd Packer wrote:I should point out that Vin Diesel played D&D for 24 years before he made it big. Draw your own conclusions.

The "but a man" part wasn't necessary, as she just might be a man after all.HemlockGrey wrote:Vin Diesel is forty? He's like Cher, but a man!
As for the geek stuff, there's really nothing wrong with being a geek. They usually make a lot more than the jocks, both at the absurdly high income brackets (The likes of Bill Gates compared to someone like Micheal Jordan), and at the lower income brackets (As the jocks usually work for the geeks)
