$3.40 US actually at current exchange rates. Once upon a time our dollar was worth more than yours, and if the war drags on long enough the Canadian dollar will catch up again.

This thread smells like a big ploy to get an audio recording of the Lord's own voice, but that could just be me.

You think people are serious about the existence of a "Canadian accent?"

Tell me, what does the "American accent" sound like?

There is no one American accent. It's regional. I guess it would be the same for Canada.

The Newfies and the rest of the Maritimers all have a goofy accent, the Quebeckers speak French (with an accent that any French person will tell you is NOT the same as that of continental France), and in Ontario our accent is generally indistinguishable from the average Hollywood accent, which is handy for the various performers we export.

Mind you, some of the people in Southwestern Ontario use a Michigan dialect, and out in Alberta, they don't really speak so much as grunt :D

PS. In the well-to-do suburbs, we have a lot of affluent white kids who try to use the dialect and diction of impoverished inner-city American black kids. But that's not an "accent" so much as raving stupidity and tough-guy wannabe-ism.

Actually, the true definitions are thus:

Yankee: Northerner who visits the South.

DAM YANKEE: Northerner who lives in the South.

DAM FORN-NER: Person of foriegn birth who lives in the South. AKA, Me.
Manic Progressive: A liberal who violently swings from anger at politicos to despondency over them.

I have a Jersey accent. And no, I don't say "Joisey." I do say water with a rather strange inflection. Most people say, "wah-ter" with a short a, whereas true Jerseyans say "waw-ter" with a long one.

And if you think that's weird, you should hear my German.

So do you have a New York inflected Jersey accent, or a Philadelphia inflected Jersey accent (yes, outsiders, there is a difference)

I would say it's more New York, beause I'm from north Jersey and my granparents are native New Yorkers. So I'm sure their speech has influenced me a bit.

Ahem. Official Word is: there is no such thing as a Canadian accent. We officially have no idea what you're talking aboat.

By the way, what sort of accent do you all imagine I have? (This really does relate to the topic. Sure.)

Ah. Pure Philadelphia down here.

If we're talking about our accents, mine is a faintly-Manchester accent, mitigated with East London. This has been diluted over fifteen years by Conneticut accent, and more recently, the urge to say 'Y'all'.

LadyTevar is less hick-sounding than you'd think. Until she sees this and slips into Hillbilly mode.
