Actually, linguistically, it's just as legitimate as any other dialect. It's got its own set of self-consistent rules (save for some regional variations), and while it violates mainstream English grammar, all of the structures you find within any language exist within Ebonics. And it's not "lazy"--it simplifies many formal English structures, but try to learn to speak it fluently and then come back and tell me how lazy it is. For the record, middle class white boys trying to talk like they're from the 'hood are usually butchering Ebonics. What they're speaking is a pidgin, a combination of two languages or dialects that is only partially comprehensible to speakers of either original language and lacks an internally consistent grammar. Children of pidgin speakers tend to assign a grammar to the pidgin (a fact that has interesting implications regarding the genetic nature of language), turning it into a creole, a legitimate third language formed by the combination of two earlier languages. That's not likely to happen with these middle class idiots pretending to be poor, but I thought I'd clarify.

The most common accent I run into is the Quebecois "Aye, mon tire est flat sur da car, tabernac". English/french jumble, "mon" (my) is said in a uniquely french way without pronouncing the "n"; emphase the "I" in tire and pronounce it tY-er; and the "da" is "the" because they can't pronounce "th".

It's not broken English. Broken English would simply be a non-English speaker's attempt to speak the language, with lots of gaps and screwed up grammar. Ebonics, whether you approve of it or not, is a legitimate dialect, as I explained in my last post.

I can pull off several; Amarillo, Reseda, and Galway, as well as several actors -- Connery, Eastwood and Lambert being the primary ones.

But speaking normally, I sound like HST. Which really kind of sucks, if you think about it.

Ah, yes! Lallans! You'd be amused by the reactions of the people around you, especially in an inner-city environment, to you and a couple buddies speaking Lallans. Really is hilarious to watch.

If you're curious to see a sample of Lallans, read anything by Robert Burns.

I'm not familiar with Scottish dialects, so I can't answer that one. For the most part, formal English speakers and Ebonics speakers are mutually intelligible, and since Ebonics is so young, it's hard to tell yet what's slang and what's "formal" Ebonics. The situation is muddied even more because a lot of Ebonics ends up in colloquial formal English.

Scottish/English is pretty hectic to understand. The Glaswegian accent in particular. I think this is due to the Scots trying to revert back to Scottish Gaelic.

I still say "ebonics" is not so much a dialect as a celebration of stupidity.

Mike, do you believe the Leafs will win the Stanley cup before the next ice age?

I'm sure you all saw this coming:

OF COURSE NOT! 'Tis impossible, you'd have to pry it out of Yzerman's cold dead hands, and don't get any ideas either, he'll kill you six times before you hit the ground (cookie to whoever gets that reference)! They're a compalation hockey's finest players, assembled into one specialized tactial unit, whose only goal is to - at all costs - aquire the the Stanley Cupyet again, so that the people of Michigan (and the surrounding area too, liek Wisconsin) may bask in it's glory. Bow down to the Kings of Hockey, they who rule over hockey, from their mighty fortress in Hockey Town, the Joe!

Your sentence is incorrectly constructed. It should read "hockey's most expensive players, assembled into one specialized tactical unit at all costs".

I've driven by there. Nice town. Luckily, I didn't hit a red light, which is why I didn't have to watch my car being stripped down to its frame from a comfortable vantage point in a pool of my own blood.

It's a celebration of stupidity when middle class poseurs try to speak it. In the inner cities, it's a legitimate dialect. From a linguistic standpoint, there's no objective reason to consider formal English to be a "better" version of the language.

Just like Carloina did last year? Or Avalanche the year before? Detroit has recently had a low record of "choking."

Har har, very funny. But last I checked the Wings were second in the league (behind Dallas and Ottawa again, but this is subject to change), to the Leafs fifth. They may be "expensive" but they get the job done, so I'm happy just as well.

I didn't say Detroit had to be a good city, contrarily the place is a fucking dump. Fortunately I live in the suburbs. But their hockey team is the finest in the league, so I ain't complaining!

I agree. Kentucky-fried drawl with a side of lazy pronunciation. I still hold to that. Maybe that's an ignorant attitude, but I really don't think I'm ignoring anything.
