Who is This "G" You Speak of?

Post by Spanky The Dolphin »

Okay, perhaps our more urban members can answer this for me...

What does it mean in the hip-hop dialect to call someone "G"?

It's an all-purpose name for your homeboys/homies/whatever. Nothing special.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

'G' - as in 'G'angster, common street shorthand for you local co-gang members. Popularized by the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop-doggy Dog, and most notably Tupac Shakur who avocated a type of semi-criminal 'thug life' philosophy.

Today its used colloquially as a term of endearment and respect between friends in both the urban black community and among your average white middle-class poser community as well.

Meh, guess it depends on who says it. One of my favourite phrases as a cute white girl is "peace out, home skillet" which is along the same lines as 'g funk' or whatever... It's all about the delivery... :D

I've heard many different translations, and heard it used on the subway many times. The most common new use is

"ahem" ::clears throat:: "G-UniT!"

Which translates, roughly, to Gorilla Unit, no Idea why that means anything though.

Ali G. He can be funny as hell.

Oh, whoops..."G" in general, eh?

I didn't start hearing it until after "New Jack City." I assume it means what everyone else says it means. I've never had a clue...I figured it was interchangable with "brother," "homie," "C-H-A-R-L-I-E, Charlie Babbit, my main man..." and the like.

Same story with "diesel." That means big/strong/something of the sort. When a guy said I was diesel I thought he meant I smelled bad.

Maybe that IS what he meant...ugh...

What I hate the most is that whenever you ask the person using the slang what the hell they are talking about, he or she get frustrated with you and says "nothing" or roll their eyes at you or such. They can't even explain their own phrases.

Hey, in all fairness, then, to pick another slang term, explain why the word 'cool' means 'hip and trendy' instead of a low temperature setting... Can you explain that derivation?

That one is actually easy: to be "hot" is to be angry, agitated, or the like. Cool, then, is the opposite...relaxed, kinda happy-go-lucky. Even on the molecular level, it's like that :) But you have to know what "hot" means, of course, other than its equivalent in Kelvins or degrees Celsius :), to get that.

So I know exactly what you mean, Zaia. In the proper cultural context, something like "diesel" should make as much sense as knowing "the opposite of hot-headed" makes sense to me.

See, I've been eating, breathing and sleeping West Side Story lately, so Diesel to me is a hot-headed member of the Jets. :D
