I attended the Combined Arms Services Staff School (CAS cubed) at Fort Leavenworth years ago, and my next door neighbor (we shared a kitchen and bathroom) was a Mormon (or Latter-day Saint), and he have me a Book of Mormon. I told him I'd read it some day, but I still haven't got around to doing so...

The founder of the Mormon church was a white-supremacist, whose dogma that white people are closer to God and that "whiteness" is spiritual cleanliness persisted up until the late 1970's. Coincidentally enough, the "latter-day saints" suddenly realized that white-supremacism was bad at the same time that the IRS was cracking down on white-supremacist religious and academic organizations and removing their tax-exempt status.

It makes sense to me. After all, their God doesn't want his people to have their tax-exempt status revoked, right?

I am good friends with a lot of Mormons. As a rule, they are no more discriminatory than you or I.

Not to dispute that there are crazies out there, but lumping all Mormons in that category is probably somewhat extreme.

The Mormons have publicly disavowed their former white-supremacist policies in response to concerns about the IRS removing their tax-exempt status, although older Mormons are probably still racist donkey-fuckers. However, the church has never acknowledged that there was anything wrong with telling people that whites are holier than non-whites in the past, because admission of gross moral failure on the issue of racism would challenge the moral authority of their "latter-day saints". After all, a man whose moral statements are supposedly derived from divine communication can't very well admit he was ever wrong.
