Marines Ordered to Dump Iraq War Booty
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:53 p.m. ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Since they arrived, U.S. Marines have been doing their own kind of looting -- grabbing Iraqi pistols, rifles, uniforms and pictures of Saddam Hussein.

On Friday, they were ordered to dump what they took or lose their rank.

``You did not conquer ... this country. Get off your high horse,'' Lt. Col. Michael Belcher told his officers. ``You took some thugs and ran them out.''

The commander of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, reminded his soldiers that the Iraqi people allowed U.S.-led forces to oust Saddam Hussein. They deserve respect, he said, and that means no looting.

There will be no ``'I won this country back. I can take what I can get,''' Belcher said.

Then he pulled out a pile of booty already confiscated: a picture of Saddam with a bullseye drawn on it, ammunition magazines and Iraqi uniforms.

Stolen tear gas canisters particularly infuriated Belcher, who worried that a Marine might fire off a canister to disperse unruly crowds in the city.

``It's chemical warfare,'' Belcher said.

Soon, a group of quiet Marines glumly gathered to toss their booty onto an ever-growing pile.

They threw in Kalashnikov rifles, gas masks and sacks of bullets.

One Marine dropped an assault vest filled with ammunition clips.

Another put in a rocket-propelled grenade round.

Lance Cpl. Randall Taylor, 19, of Texarkana, Texas, came out of his Humvee carrying two Iraqi grenades he had hoped to use before leaving.

``I was gonna throw these,'' he said, smiling like a shamed child.

Other Marines were angry.

``You don't have to give that up, do you?'' Pfc. Michael Lara, 19, of Raymondville, Texas, asked as a colleague added a helmet to the pile.

Some Marines plotted to smuggle home smaller things -- a pistol, Iraqi military patches ripped from uniforms, small pictures of Saddam.

They had been warned before against collecting war souvenirs, but some Marines had been rapidly collecting huge caches.

At first they took small things -- knives, perhaps a pistol or two. But as they stumbled upon large armories filled with nearly every type of weapon in Iraqi's arsenal, they became more brazen, taking rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

A bartering economy emerged based on weaponry and cigarettes. One Marine offered an Iraqi sword for a pack of hard-to-get smokes. He was turned down. Hiding a military patch is one thing. Smuggling a sword is altogether different.

Cpl. Jesse Schutz, 21, of Omaha, Neb., happily surrendered two Kalashnikov rifles and swords a few days ago so they could be run over by a tank and destroyed.

``It just isn't worth it,'' he said. ``I can go back to Wal-Mart to buy a gun instead of stealing it from a country.''

Well, you can understand them not wanting to let the troops take home rifles and RPG rounds, but the rest is just stupid. I really don't think the Iraqis are going to care if the Coalition troops take home a few pictures of Saddam....

Its not US policy, and against the UCMJ. There was a rumor (not knowing if it is true or not) that the Kuwaiti government offered to buy every US soilder involved in the first gulf war a new car. The US Government would not allow it because they did not want to look like mercenaries.

This is pathetic. Our regiments still have trophies from the Indian Wars and they're not giving those up - So what sort of silliness is this? The Iraqis themselves are happy enough to be involved in the trade, it appears. And why the hell are we destroying these weapons? They should be stockpiled for reissuing to the new Iraqi army. Sure, they're not top-of-the-line, but they'll do until we can get them more advanced equipment. And the destruction of swords? That's just pathetic. If the officers in question are still alive those should be returned to them, and if not, their families. The bureaucrats who thought up this insane policies should be shot. All this is doing is lowering morale among our own troops, and removing resources from any potential native Iraqi force we might want to arm in the near future for whatever contigency we might have to face. Pure stupidity.

Oh that reminds me.

The last Iraq war.

Your troops where forbidden to bring anything back and that included SAND!

I where present in the return of the field hospital we sent to the war effort last time.

I almost shit my pants when I saw the junk they brought back.

Some of it can be seen in the Swedish war museum here in Stockholm.

Hell, my Grandfather brought home a Germany Luger and someone else I know inherited a Japanese issued rifle. What the hell is wrong with soldiers bringing home firearms? These people are probably the BEST trained people to have such things in their collections. They are doing a dangerous job and the least you can do is give them a little slack and allow them to bring home a small number of trophies.

And as to the weapons. I am really wondering why they are destroying all those AK weapons when they could have stockpiled them to save for the future. At least the military has stopped shooting at abandoned tanks now.

Okay, seriously, let the guys take some shit home. It's not like they're demanding that they be able to rape and pillage Iraqi towns; they want to take home some firearms. I know I'd certainly want to. Why let those AK-47's go to waste?

I can see not letting them take the heavier stuff, like RPG launchers and such, but pistols, grenades, bullets and rifles should be up for grabs.

For the destruction of weapons, I guess two things are the reasons for it. One it forces the Iraqi to buy new weapons to replace the destroy ones. Not like they already have to replace their aircraft, ships, tanks and armor vehicles.

Two, gun control nazis through why the fuck they want to destroy swords is beyond me. Also the Gun control don't want any weapons brought into the USA.

The US military is already a fucking mercenary force on the virtue of paid volunteers serving in it whether or not they're US citizens.

I can understand them not letting the troops bring back AK-47s (the ones issued by he Iraqi army are full auto, and you can't own fully automatic weapons without a class III weapons permit - and no machine guns or true assault rifles made after 1986 have been approved for private ownership in any case, and no foreign made ones manufactured after 1968 [this means the number of full auto weapons in the U.S. approved for private ownership is finite), but why they won't let them have pistols, bayonets, helmets, flags, etc. is beyond me.

They wouldn't let them have pistols in the first Gulf War either. My best friend is a Gulf War vet, and all they'd let him have was a bayonet. I think it is modern day squeamishness and political correctness run amok.
