Yes! Been called for Jury Duty!
W00t! Always wanted to do this. Hope I don't get filtered out before the trial.
It's District Court, Criminal Jurisdiction, on 19 May 2003.
Luckily, since I don't have a job as of now (just quasi-job/work experience at law firm) this does not inconvenience me whatsoever.
Hope my uni timetable doesn't wreck my chances of going. It shouldn't. I hope.

Remember: during the interview process, explain to them that people who wind up in court always got there because they have suspicious lifestyles, so they're probably guilty of something

No Mike, and I helped a friend of mine get out of jury duty this, you have to insist that no matter what they did they deserve the death penatly. It works even better when the state you're in doesn't even have the death penalty.Darth Wong wrote:Remember: during the interview process, explain to them that people who wind up in court always got there because they have suspicious lifestyles, so they're probably guilty of something
But- I don't wanna get out of it!Stormbringer wrote:

Or you could just say that you believe that everyone is guilty until proven innocent. And they had better do a damn good job of it. With lots of color pictures.Darth Wong wrote:Remember: during the interview process, explain to them that people who wind up in court always got there because they have suspicious lifestyles, so they're probably guilty of something

before I even had to show up. Apparently they'd already selected all the
jurors they need for that week. I can't say that I was disappointed.

If you're young, you'll probably get dismissed. A judge almost dismissed me when he found out I was in college, because he said, "You college students sometimes have funny ideas about the law" (I definitely would have been dismissed if I explained my objection to a mere preonderance of evidence being good enough for a guilty verdict in civil court, but there were 40 people watching and I didn't want to look like a total smartass). As it was, the prosecutor got rid of me and another college-age girl before they went after anyone else.
Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. My dad did that many years ago for an upcoming murder trial. He meant what he said, but was kicked off anyway...Stormbringer wrote:No Mike, and I helped a friend of mine get out of jury duty this, you have to insist that no matter what they did they deserve the death penatly. My history teacher got jury duty last month. It was interesting that she didn't get dismissed, since she knew one of the lawyers rather well.

Be sure to explain to the judge what a great juror you'd make. Tell him about your uncanny ability to spot guilty people just by looking at them, and say it has something to do with their skin tones and the way light reflects off their foreheads.

Its easy to think of stuff to say, but much harder to bullshit when you are up there in front of the judge.
I only served once on a jury as an alternate. It was an interesting experience to watch two old philipino ladies fight over a real estate deal.
The lady that wanted to purchase was such a fricking scammer the judge eventually dismissed the case before it was done.

Jury duty once. Twelve fucking hours for nothing. I wasn't admitted to any case, and I had to be the last pool taken because we were called in on a previous case and they read a charge that had been dropped, thus we were "tainted" and had to be sent back out.
