How about a "Lords of the rings" technology level? Each person can rule their own city-state, or band together to form a loose confederation.
Or we could each rule a planet instead of a city.

That's exactly the kind of tech level I want to avoid... primarily because I have problems thinking that powerful.

That was a slight exaggeration, at least for a good STGOD anyway. STGOD mk1 had corvettes with the firepower of 50 death stars.

Well la de fucking da! I want DS9 level technology, and I'm gonna whine about it until we finally decide. I may have problems thinking STGODmk.1 uber, but I can just punch in a few numbers on my calculator and square it a few times.

Isn't it even easier and more fun than with über-tech?
For example, you have to admit a ship is lost, and can't come up with some cheesy cop-out ( 'You didn't destroy it I altered reality!')

Hell no, I won't be having that here. Enough of that happened in the ASVS STGOD1, and that nearly turned into a flamefest with accusations across the board.

So you lost a ship, BFD. Or look for loopholes (e.g. the other player only said he fired twenty missiles at your ship, not at all of them impacted) that are more often than not intentionally given.
