I do now!
I'd just like to say hello... I'm not making a good first impression, am I? Sorry.
Anyone who uses self-deprecating humor well is doing fine by me
Well, a friend of mine recommended this site if I liked sci-fi and debating. Well... I like sci-fi, and I like watching debates, but I'm not very good at debating myself. So, I'd like to learn how on this site, and just have some fun.
That's a good place to start!
Might I suggest that you read over Michael's list of logical fallacies? Knowing how
not to argue is also a good start
Given the way in which you express yourself, I think you'll take to understanding the weak induction fallacies like a duck to water.
I'll confess, I like both Star Trek and Star Wars, equally. But I've read through the fights that have broken out around here over it, and I don't really like flaming, to anyone. So, for my first topic, I'll pick something that hopefully won't make anyone angry:
I know what you mean. I have a bad temper, and I've flamed some decent folks that didn't deserve two broadsides and a superlaser shot (trust me, such lingo will become very familiar the longer you're here
). I oftentimes felt bad about it.
But I did learn something about as much that I'd like to share with you: don't fret too much about making people mad. Everything will, at some time or another, be a source of contention, and many of the best ideas are the most controversial. But I appreciate that you want to get your feet wet with something light...no one wants to start out posting in a flamesuit, after all. (It's too damned hard to type in one of the things. Plus they smell bad.)
Which is your favorite sci-fi satire and why? "Space Balls" or "Galaxy Quest"?
I'm putting this here because "Space Balls" basically makes fun of SW, while "Galaxy Quest" pokes fun at ST. And, I don't think it fits anywhere else.
So... Will you cut me a little slack, being new and all? Thank you.
Slack measured and cut at six feet. I hope that's enough...
My favorite's definitely "Galaxy Quest," not so much because I love the film--it was okay--but that I don't really like "Space Balls."
SB was, IMO, trying too hard to be funny. When someone "combs" the desert with a gigantic comb, for instance, I'm a bit put-off. At least to these peepers, the film was full of such ham-fisted material. Over-the-top jokes
can be very funny, but my humor favors something a little drier as a rule...so I suppose I like the
illusion of some reality in comedy rather than one big slap-stick fest or wildly exaggerated scenario after another.
That's not to say the movie didn't have its moments (Pizza the Hutt), but I found that the bad outweighed the good. I noticed as much of many "contemporary" Mel Brooks movies...after "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein," I feel like he lost a little of his magic. (Even his Robin Hood film fell flat in some places, though as a whole I found it far better than SB.)
