Where were you when you first heard about 9/11?

Post by Gandalf »

I ask this because it was said by a few people I know that you'll always remember where you were when you first heard about the attacks.
Personally I was in my loungeroom eating breakfast, the event itself happening about 7 hours beforehand, I was eating my Pop-Tarts. I turned on the TV, saw what was ging on, I thought it must have been the tenth anniversary of the bombing or something. I saw the plane clip and the world hasn't been the same.

What about you?

I had slept in as I didn't have class until 1:30pm. My fiance had just started woking at a new job and was in that morning for orientation, she called at about 8:50 waking me up to get the phone number for her father who lives in Maryland, and is a civilian contractor who works in the Pentagon(he was fine, he'd eaten something bad and had called off  ) All I remember was her rushing off telling me to turm on the Tv and something about a bomb at the Pentagon and WTC.....I flip on the boob tube it was on MSNBC just in time to watch the second airliner hit the south tower on live Tv.....I sat down on my couch , naked as the day I was born and didnt move for the better part of 20mins, my brain flatly refused to believe what I had just seen, I distinctly remember saying over and over to myself "This cant be real , shit like this only happens in fucking movies!!"..........Eventually I got cold and then noticed that I was naked , got dressed quickly and returned to watching the horror unfolding in real time in front of me. When the first tower collapsed I remember that I almmost yelled , but all that came out was a kind of keening wail of absolute disbelief and horror, after that much of the day is a daze of anger and disbelief.

It really is one of thoes things that will stay with me till I take the big dirt nap, I remember the details as crisply as if it happened yesterday......

Sitting out in the hall waiting for my Linguistics discussion class to start, I think. It was around 11-11:30 AM, so about an hour after it happened. Overheard some other people talking about it.

Initially, I for some reason deducted that two fighter jets had crashed into the towers. I don't know if at that current time they had fallen yet or not, but I assumed they were still up, but damaged.

Later, I overhead more about it while on the Cambus, and I remember being fairly pissed off that the comic shop had closed for the day. It was a very hot day and I was not in the mood for that kind of thing.

So I decided to go to the Main Library for a while since my classes were up (this was about a month before I was assigned a dorm, as I registered for college late, so I commuted from CR with my sister).

I bought an edition of a local newspaper (the Iowa Press Citizen or something like that) that was printed that day, and read it at the Library. It was then that I learned what actually happened.

Forgot to put this is my original post, if I had stayed up to watch Voyager I'd have heard it as it happened.

At school. I was wandering around before class and overheard two people talking about planes for some reason. Then I got to my first class and found out why.

Sitting on the living room sofa reading the days newspaper with the TV on, but the audio turned off. I clanced at the TV while turning a page and saw a footage from a helicopter filming the first tower after it had been hit, this happened about 5 minutes before the second plane hit. At first I though that there was some action movie on TV, which would have been kinda weird considering the hour, but then I turned on the audio and realized that it was a special news broadcast and that the flaming WTC towerwas not a special effect.

Sitting in computer lab, saw a post on a forum, figured some idiot had crashed a small plane into the towers. Left home, then my gf called me while I was on the bus and told me what was happening. Was a pretty big shock.

I was working graveyard at the casino where I am currently employed. A friend of mine working to said his mother just called him and said the a plane had hit the WTC and that it must have been some terrible accident. Then a few day shift people came in to work, one pulled his car to the employee entrance and turned on the news station and that's when we learned about what had happened. It really sucked for us because we had just opened and we didn't have sattelite or cable wired yet. On the drive home (30 minute drive) I listend to the radio and then when I got home I had the TV on CNN and was chatting online with friends around the world.

Found out about it within a few minutes of coming home. Spend the rest of the day calling everyone I knew to talk about it.

I had just woken up. It was like 7-something in the morning here, and I was getting ready to go to school. My friend called, and told my mom to turn on the news, so she did. I just stood there watching as the buildings burned (both planes had hit), and my mom went in the other room to call all her sisters. At first, I assumed the crash was some sort of accident, until they said that two planes had hit. Then I didn't know what to think, but I remember thinking it was just going to be a matter of mopping up, until right there, one of the buildings fell down. It was insanely surreal, and I calmly told my mom, "One of 'em just fell down." She went all crazy, and I went to school.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Was sitting in the living room watching a movie. Then suddenly this newsfeed appeared at the bottom of the screen. Switched over to the newschannel and saw the burning tower. For a few minutes I couldn't believe what I was seeing. "Is this real?" And then it was just this very horrible feeling.

I was at home on a free lesson. I saw the first one hit on the news before the second one hit and before the pentagon was hit - I thought it was an accident.

I was up because i couldnt sleep for some reason or another. So i decided to hop on my computer to make music on Fruity Loops. I turn around to see an airplane hitting a building and im thinking ... " damn, this looks like a pretty cool movie. " So i take off my head phones only to hear the first thing said... " i repeat, this is not a movie, i garuntee this is happening right now... " In fact, i was talking to KojiKun when it happened. It was both frightening and thrilling, because my uncle works in the pentagon :(

I was in my room at college playing "Bridge Builder" with some buds, when a friend called and told me a plane had crashed into the WTC. I assumed it was an accident, but went to another friends room who had a TV and saw the second plane hit live. We all then pulled up stumps and went to the common room where there was already a bit of a crowd and watched it from there. However offensive it may seem the mood was fairly light once it had been confirmed that noones immediate family was hurt. Indeed, bets were being taken as to who had done it, what the next target would be etc etc etc.

Woke up about 4 that afternoon. Heard my grandmother's car leaving so I rushed out of bed to go and tell her to buy me some breakfast cereal. On the way down I noticed a bunch of fire and explosions and shit on TV but didn't care, as I needed cereal. After I caught my grandmother before she left I asked my uncle about the fire and stuff blowing up on TV and he said some planes hit the Trade Centers and the Pentagon. I wasn't all that shocked, really. though I did watch CNN for the next several days/weeks. I'm not a big "getting shocked" type person. Geez, everyone remember the disturbing displays of uber-patriotism that followed? Frankly, that scared me more than any terrorists could.

I too was a wee bit scared about that, I thought the country would go all McCarthyist.

I was visiting a customer that had a problem with a shipment of product we had just sent. the first plane had hit just as i arrived. I remember sitting in my car thinking to myself 'how the hell can a plance accidently hit a 110 story building in broad daylight?' I heard the second plane hit live on the radio with the quality tech and engineer i had the meeting with. As i was driving back to work i had to pass TF Green airport and the National Guard had already passed out the ammo and sent out the humvee's. thats when it hit me. I went back to work and called my girfriend and worried about my uncles and cousins that worked the Metro-North railroad.

I don't think many people had a choice, all of our local TV stations broadcast CNN repeatedly for 4 days. There was NO regular programming.
