Edit: She wasn't that great of a ship, designed first and formost to be a troop transport, her accomodation wan't as good as Cunarders et al, which in the time of the tans atlantic airliner, quality of accomodation became much more important.

Here's information from the foundation. Her accomadations were considered some of the best in the world at the time.
The United States actually developed some 56,000 more shp than the Midway class. The United States had eight turbines - four high pressure, four low pressure, one of each driving each screw. The Midways were powered by four Westinghouse turbines, one to each shaft.

Hey, that's sweet. I can see her every time I cross the bridge from Jersey.
I wonder if she's going to be restored in the Kaverner yards (the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard). They used to build battleships there, they ought to have facilities big enough for her.

I just read the press release on Norwegian Cruise Line's site. Apparently, they're going to refurbish her as a modern superliner and make her the flagship of the company's new U.S. flagged operations. Assuming NCL's financing holds up and the government doesn't fuck everything up somehow, this is the best thing that could have happened to her.

Is the SS United States the largest, or merely one of the larger Ocean Liners?
