I think the real question you need to ask yourself is whether or not otherwise law-abiding,non-violent drug users/abusers/addicts are better off paying heavy fines or serving hard prison time at the taxpayer's expense for doing nothing more than committing a slow form of suicide versus drug counseling and rehabilitation.

Hm ... the guy would issue and unconditional pardon to all non-violent drug offenders in prison. That's noble, but he'd be impeached in the blink of an eye.

Impeached for what? Don't they need some legitimate grounds for that first? Didn't Clinton prove during his last days in office that the President can pretty much impeach anyone he wants with impunity?

It's one thing to pardon murderers and people who hurt other people; it's quite another to pardon drug users. Both parties would impeach him for abuse of power or something like that, and he'd be removed from office, unless of course, none of the Congressmen want to be reelected.

He's smart enough to know he'll never get elected, so he can make pie-in-the-sky statements like that just to get people to think. The idea is, I think, that you read something like that and go, "What?! That's outrageous! You can't let all the drug offenders out of........wait a minute? Why can't you? Why are they in jail to begin with?" I can attest that this works--I've been in debates where I say the president ought to to that exact thing, and when people say, "You can't do that!" I ask "Why?" Then, after some hemming and hawing, you get them to retreat down to the Mr. Mackie defense: "Um, drugs are bad, mmm-kay," and then you have them.
