Demon Possession?

Post by master_yoda »

I hear from a lot of hardcore christians that they have experienced demonic posessions and excorcisms.

Is there a logical explanation to demonic possessions?

Schizophrenia for the possession, I would think.. as for the "cure," I'd say fundie-ism.

If you believe you can be possessed by a demon, you just might find a way to be possessed by a demon.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.

A psychologist I know talked about one encounter with a "possessed" person.

He was invited to go to this farmhouse to observe what he was told was an interesting Church service, being curious minded he went out and there were a bunch of people talking about the Bible. Nothing wrong with it, nice people, and since he was Christian he was beginning to have a good time.

Then everyone hushed and looked expectantly towards the staircases and out walked a girl wearing a simple tunic made out of rough white cloth. She came down, stood in front of the people, and then while still in a rigid position by an unknown force was slammed extremely violently face foward onto the wood floor and back up again without so much as a scratch on her.

Then, her voice went octaves lower and spoke in a distinct man's voice and said "I am Moses."

Of course, the guy was wondering what the heck was going on, while the girl with the man's voice kept speaking. Then he asked her, "If you're Moses you must know Jesus, right?" And she got really mad at this question and wouldn't answer and he kept asking.

The girl looked at him and said, "You do not belong here." And he said he felt a strong sense of violence building and quickly left the building. This was years ago when he was a grad student, and I do not doubt his word or his recollection. He's a psychologist, I'm sure he would know the difference between mental illness and something else.

Testimonial accounts are no substitute for actual proof of extraordinary events, no matter how reliable the witness. Sounds like horseshit than me.

Trytostaydead, nothing you've just said demonstrates anything of the supernatural. What he felt was subjective. How do you quantify a "strong sense of violence?" How do you test for it?

While it may be what he saw, it still does not show anything that cannot be explained without the supernatural.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"

I've never been given any useful or subtantial 'proof' that anything of that nature exists. Though I have known several people cursed with random luck by the Coincidence Demon. I've seen his craftwork do many strange random things.

IMO, the concept of demonic posession is as absurd as those preachers who put their hands on people's heads and push them over backwards, saying they have been touched by the Lord.

One big pile of week-old stankin' horseshit.

I'm often possessed by typo demons, if they count (three struck while typing this post, but I banished them all before clicking send  ).

Some of them do shove quite hard. People fall over because they are totally relaxed, "given in" state.

Why am I reminded of "Rapture Ready" and the woman who's husband was beating her and her children, yet everyone simply said: "Its the devil making him do it. Just pray to Jesus and it will all be OK."

Its a way of them justifying in their own sick fucking minds that god didn't make humans evil, the devil did.

Demonic possessions? Right. This is the twenty-first century. We don't need to blame everything on goblins.

I don't need to believe in demons. All I have to do is look into the mirror. I'm thinking about personifing my psychological problems into demons, so they can make easier targets for me to "exorcise." From what I hear, several drug/alcohol addicts have done this and have been successful in defeating their "demons of addicton," so to speak.

Doesn't matter whether you see demons as psychologcial or external...In most cases the exorcised person feels much better afterwards. Kinda like a "spiritual enema," if you will.

Anyway, I would very much like to talk to one of these 'non-psychological' demons...Perhaps I should paint a pentagram on my bedroom floor?

You move 2 hours of porn on a 5" disc and you don't believe in a God? That was my whole reason for moving to Deism.

Huh. People who are 'possessed' have always struck me as simply seeking attention, albeit in a fairly pathetic way. Of course they may genuinly believe it if they are mentally ill, but otherwise...
