Oh, incidentally, after reading the DDX thread, my first proposed new class of ship will be a cruiser-sized vessel built primarily to provide gunnery support.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! All votes for me! Wheeee!" -- Lagmonster

Besides, I'm having you assasinated; if you're stupid idea for an Imperial Sea Destroyer doesn't kill you first.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Oh, incidentally, after reading the DDX thread, my first proposed new class of ship will be a cruiser-sized vessel built primarily to provide gunnery support.

Even Marina's DOD budget isn't infinate, so be careful about over-specializing warshipsGrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Oh, incidentally, after reading the DDX thread, my first proposed new class of ship will be a cruiser-sized vessel built primarily to provide gunnery support.
One or two 8" in single or twin mounts should suffice (maybe even 155mm AGS). Probably some VLS cells for ESSM (self-defense) and TLAM. I don't think Aegis is needed for this, though carrying SM2/SM3 should be an option once CEC gets its kinks worked out.

Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

Ooh! Ooh! I thought of something else! On top of my being the Director of Homeland Security, can I also be the offical "Zap Branagan" of Marina's regime! Just so I can say stuff like:
"Well, if it isn't the luscious Leela... this is turning into one sexy struggle for the future of humanity."
It's always been my dream to be a cheesy Kirk parody, and this *sniff* is my chance.

We need to set up the Office of Necromancy so we can resurrect Bull and get some new Manji-esque supercannonGil Hamilton wrote:Then you should take my advice. That sounds like a third hat to me. Hrm... being a Director of Homeland Security, Zap Branagan, and a Necromancer that allows us to constantly ressurrect ammo for our Manjiworks supercannon. I like it.phongn wrote:We need to set up the Office of Necromancy so we can resurrect Bull and get some new Manji-esque supercannon

Stormbringer: Are you illiterate? I'm not building any Imperial Sea Destroyers. As for stealing your idea, hey, I'm boss of the Navy! I can do that! Now quit your yapping, lest I bomb your house.
Phong: Thanks for the input. I'm thinking two 8'' in single turrets, one up front and one in the back. As for the budget, I don't think we'll exactly need vast numbers of these ships. It's just a hole in our lineup that could use filling. And hey, I have to imagine shells are cheaper than cruise missiles. Over the long haul it may save us a few bucks.
Basically, rather than going apeshit, I just want to take the existing Navy and tweak a thing or two. Some things I would like to do are already underway, like replacing our oldest carriers with CVNX. (I do want a massive buy of Raptors and JSFs though, budget be damned! Please Marina? Please please pretty please???)

Not neccessarily. A small production run of these limited-use warships will probably inflate unit costs. DD21 was cancelled in part because it was too limited in use (it's combat systems were FUBAR, but that's another issue entirely). If you really wanted to, you could attempt to refit the Spruances with a lightweight 8" gun.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Phong: Thanks for the input. Shells are cheaper than cruise missiles or even low-cost land-attack missiles like Harpoon II or SLAM-ER, but also have their limitation.
Navalised F-22 == the super expensive. You'll be much better off filling up the flattops' airwings in the meanwhile (which will probably take some years) and maybe opening the production lines for the A-6F and the F/A-14 line (which would also be obscenely expensive)Basically, rather than going apeshit, I just want to take the existing Navy and tweak a thing or two. Fuck guns, we'll easily afford an Arsenal ship for every one of our fifty ARG's loaded with nothing but unitary GMLRS converted to POLAR.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Oh, incidentally, after reading the DDX thread, my first proposed new class of ship will be a cruiser-sized vessel built primarily to provide gunnery support.
