Battle of the Guitarists
Seeing as how music threads have been fairly poular recently, I thought I'd throw in a poll for the best Rock guitarist.
Don't give marks based just on technical skill - bear in mind artistic flare, songwriting ability, and (where appropriate) potential...

Jimmy Page.
I swear to God that I can honestly get high just by listening to Led Zeppelin, especially when Page goes into one of his long, brilliant solos.
Led Zeppelin's BBC Sessions is easily one of the best albums I ever bought.

Jimmy Page is good, but I don't see Angus Young or Mark Knopfler

May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce.
Hendrix. Not the strongest songwriter, but he was so far beyond anyone else in artistic flare, technical skill, potential, and flat-out talent that he takes the cake.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Aye, but May was the one I voted for here and always will.Keevan_Colton wrote:I'm a big clapton fan...did you see the Queens Golden Jubilee stuff?Admiral Valdemar wrote:Uh, Clapton?
I acknowledge Clapton, Hendrix (the only guy Clapton bowed down to as superior) and Page, but I'm a Queen fan and therein lies my allegiance.
Hendrix. He's the one guy who could do anything with a guitar and have it sound cool. He could take a random whack at the strings and then bend the notes & feedback in such a way that it comes out sounding musical and super cool. Anyone one else I've heard trying to imitate this just ends up sounding stupid. I have no clue how he pulls it off and might as well write it off to magic.
Also, his blues solos and improvisations are simply out of this world, they're musical, full of emotion, and the sounds are just amazing. Take a listen to his live version of "Red House" on the Blue Wild Angel CD, or "Hear My Train a Comin'" on his Blues album, it's intense. The guy's just too good.

aerius: I'll vote for you if you sleep with me.
Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

I put SRV and Jimi Hendrix in essentially the same class: the top. They're really the only two players whose music I can listen to and feel like they're really speaking with the guitar. With everyone else it's just good music.

You know what blows me away? I was listening to the original "Johnny B. Goode" today and listening to old Chuck Berry was awesome. The crazy part was that this guy was shredding that old Gibson in the 50's! I can't believe how advanced his leads and sounds were for that era.
Of course, the 50's had some great entertainers that overshadowed him, but Chuck rocked!

Paige.
I'm suprised Robert Fripp of King Crimson isn't on this list. He is on par with most of these people.

It's impossible to choose between them. If you play on any instrument you should know why.
They are all very good guitarists. Even Vai, who is rather labelled a technical player is a damn good songwriter and sings good too. (Fire Garden album)
BTW the "technical player" name should be applied to the Edge, I think.
To make things more complicated, I'd like to add some:
Nuno Bettencourt (made one of my favourite solo in "Get the funk out")
Steve Stevens (ex-Billy Idol, later made a damn good flamenco album)
Yngwie Malmsteen (his song "I don't know is one of the best to listen in car)
Richie Sambora (made some good thing when he's not playing with Bon Jovi)
Eric Johnson, B.B. King, Santana, Clapton, Gary Moore, Knopfler etc.
These names all cover unforgetable musical values.
Love them all!

Les Paul. Besides inventing the solid-body electric guitar and his numerous musical innovations (reverb, multi-track recording, overdubbing), he is one hell of a picker.
and a few others: B.B. King, Chet Atkins, any of the Wooten clan, Andy Summers, and the poll list. And why not, Keith Richards
oh, and Adrian Belew.
