Movies with Plot Holes
I watched Minority Report again today, and this time I around I started to notice some of the MASSIVE plot holes in that film; too much to wrap my mind around. I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy it again.
Any of you guys had a movie ruined by plot holes?

And you could have flown a small moon through the plotholes in Insurrection.

Good god, where to start, where to start.
1) The whole premise. How did Burgess ensure that Anderton would meet Leo Crow and kill him? All he did was hire Leo Crow to pretend to have killed Sean. There is no evidence that he did anything other than this to set up a chain of events which would eventually lead to Anderton finding and killing Crow. The thing that started this chain of events was the pre-vision of the murder, which creates an infinity loop; seeing the vision of the murder is the only thing that sets off the chain events that ultimately leads to the murder. Burgess had no way of knowing that simply hiring Leo Crow to play Sean's killer would lead to Anderton finding him and killing him. How could he have known that this setup would inevitably lead to the precogs having the vision, which ultimately set off the chain of events?
2) At the end of the movie, there is talk of Precrime being taken national. How is this done with only three precogs?
3) The murder of Ann Lively; it's pretty obvious that the precogs have a limited range (this is why the program is confined to Washington D.C.; it would completely unfeasible to go through the thousands of murders occuring yearly across the country and single out the DC murders). So why didn't Burgess just go out of the range of the precogs to kill Ann Lively? There would be danger of the minority report revealing what Burgess had done; the precogs would not have seen it.
4) There should have been a red ball for Burgess' attempted murder of Ann Lively. There wasn't one.

I can't answer all the holes, but I can answer some of them, due to my viewing of the movie a couple of times.
The old British lady who talked to John for a while told about how the precogs were made. It could be done again, but since so few of the patients survived originally, obviously they have to prove that the results are worth the method.2) At the end of the movie, there is talk of Precrime being taken national. Probably because Burgess made a slip and said that Agatha was staying in the DC area, and as such, couldn't arrange a meeting farther away.3) The murder of Ann Lively; it's pretty obvious that the precogs have a limited range (this is why the program is confined to Washington D.C.; it would completely unfeasible to go through the thousands of murders occuring yearly across the country and single out the DC murders). If I understood the premise of the program, the visions are only analyzed if they aren't a repeat. If they are a repeat, the technician on hand inside the Temple just puts it on the ignore/delete list.4) There should have been a red ball for Burgess' attempted murder of Ann Lively. There wasn't one.

Then there must be a cover-up, because there's no way the engineering of neuroin babies would go over well with the public. The old British lady who talked to John for a while told about how the precogs were made. Unlikely. Burgess isn't stupid enough to make such a minor error, and even if he did, he could just contact Lively again and direct her to a new location.Probably because Burgess made a slip and said that Agatha was staying in the DC area, and as such, couldn't arrange a meeting farther away.
It looked like the system was automated to me. There should be a new ball for every original vision. If I understood the premise of the program, the visions are only analyzed if they aren't a repeat. If they are a repeat, the technician on hand inside the Temple just puts it on the ignore/delete list.

No shit. When Anderton was sneaking towards the Temple, there's a tour going on outside, and the tour guide mentions that the precogs live in spacious apartments, read lots of fan mail, etc. Then there must be a cover-up, because there's no way the engineering of neuroin babies would go over well with the public.

Oh, damn, I thought you were asking for movies with great plot holes. My movie for that would be....*drum roll*.......ATOMIC TWISTER!!!
Damn I love that shitty movie.

I think the reason why was because it wasn't considered as an original vision by 2 of the 3 precog, hence the minority report (1 of them see what the other 2 don't, or something).Durran Korr wrote:It looked like the system was automated to me. There should be a new ball for every original vision.

In any case the last three holes aren't so bad, but the first hole is so massive that it just ruins the movie for me.

Unlikely; Anderton found out about Ann Lively, and no less then a few days later he was a wanted man. Burgess wouldn't have had time to try many different possibilities in such a short time period.neoolong wrote:He could have just been trying different methods until he got one that worked.Durran Korr wrote:In any case the last three holes aren't so bad, but the first hole is so massive that it just ruins the movie for me.

Right, which is the whole point. If they don't say that the Precogs live in a pool half-naked in a state of semi-conciousness, they probably aren't going to tell the public how the Precogs are made. It's called propaganda.

Many B-Movies and kitsch classics have plot holes so big that you could drive the Batmobile through them.
There's also movies which not only have massive plot holes, but didn't even make sense to begin with.¨

Since when was it going to be done with only 3?Durran Korr wrote:2) At the end of the movie, there is talk of Precrime being taken national. How is this done with only three precogs?
If Ann Lively was killed outside the Precogs' zone of influence then the police would probably been able to work out that she had been killed, but if she was inside then the police would treat it as a missing persons case (seeing as how the precogs didn't show her being murdered after the first time (as far as they knew)), and the investigation would peter out.Durran Korr wrote:3) The murder of Ann Lively; it's pretty obvious that the precogs have a limited range (this is why the program is confined to Washington D.C.; it would completely unfeasible to go through the thousands of murders occuring yearly across the country and single out the DC murders). And anyway, Burgess was the head of precrime at the time, and he could throw some weight about that he wouldn't be able to throw outside precrimes' jurisdiction.
I suspect they didn't have a ball system at the time; after all, the fallguy Burgess hired was never identified, and his name should have shown up on a ball.Durran Korr wrote:4) There should have been a red ball for Burgess' attempted murder of Ann Lively. There wasn't one.
Hope that helps.

Barring B-movie(ah classic...who cars about story...or hell anything really)
ST Time Travel stuff...hell couple TNG movies(WTF is in order)
A good many action movies...and so on.
It all depends, if the movie is trying not to be anything except man vs(whatever) I won't notice the plot hole until AFTER I've watched it a couple times.
But if tries to be deep and moving and has Mack-Truck sized holes in it...then I say it's up for grabs.

Bah! If you want real plot holes, I recommend Reptilicus!!Vympel wrote:You want plotholes? Try any Star Trek film except for No. 4 that deals with time travel.
In that movie, a gigantic dragon is roaming Denmark, yet people are STILL GOING TO THE BEACH, even though they probably know that they may meet a grisly death at the jaws of a dragon!! That's simply absurd.
Then again, it's a giant monster movie. And we all know how coherent plots such movies have.

I learned a while ago not to let bad science ruin a good action movie. I guess you have to when your area of expertise is so misunderstood and yet so bloody popular (opening sequence to the X-Men, anyone?)Beowulf wrote:Not ruined do to plot holes, but rather holes in their science, was Armageddon.
