Yeah... my mom's pretty big on church, so I have a few 'normal' copies, as well as a "Teen's Bible"... of course, they're all collecting dust... I'd remove them from my bookshelf altogehter, except that the questions that would follow wouldn't be worth it.

I've never owned a bible. As for why not, I've never had a need for one.

My mother's the daughter of a Lutheran priest, so I have a bible on my bookshelf even though I'm not religious.

I have a handy NIV version (used to take this to church with me), King James (which my father took from somewhere), and a huge NIV Study Bible with annotations (for that time when my parents and I were in bible study classes).

My parents have the "Good News Bible" and a very cool encyclopedia(or dictionary, I forget) which is based on actual archealogical evidence. It came out in handy while I was studying the Hittites.

Well, I have KJV, KJV with words of jesus in red, KJV with the words of jesus in red + annotations and notes, NIV, Finnish old (x3) and new (x2)versions as well as Hebrew, Hebrew with English translations, Hebrew with finnish translations, Latin, Deutsch, Swedish and Russian versions and various books with annotations, historical notes Etc about the bible.
I once counted that I have 25 actual bibles and 17 other books about the bible.

I inherited them from my great-uncle, who was a Lutheran priest. He's wife had died some years earlier and he had no children of his own, so his posessions kinda got split up between the rest of the family, I was know to be an avid reader so they gave me all his books, including a whole lot of bibles and other christian reading (I was 16 back then and not yet an Atheist).

Everyone has a Gideon Bible. If you don't, they hunt you down and give you one.

ROFL!

And don't forget, if you resist accepting their bible they will tie you down to a chair, force your eyelids open with tooth picks and make you read it from cover to cover. Heheheheheheh.

I've got a pocket-sized Gideon's NT+Pslams and a full size NIV that has become separated from its cover and several pages. Got given the NIV at a youth group and the Gideon in school, so I've never actually bought a Bible. Got a bunch of Mark's Gospels from out CU mission this year as well.

Gideons International is the organization that leaves Bibles in hotel rooms:
Gideons International wrote:The Gideons International, founded in 1899, serves as an extended missionary arm of the church and is the oldest Christian business and professional men's association in the United States of America. A board of distinguished Christian laymen, international in makeup, supervises the worldwide Gideon ministry, ensuring an efficient, economical operation.
On the name of Gideon, he was a judge of Israel, written about in Judges 6 - 8, and the Gideons International website describes him thus:
Gideons International wrote:Gideon was a man who was willing to do exactly what God wanted him to do, regardless of his own judgment as to the plans or results. Humility, faith, and obedience were his great elements of character. This is the standard that the Gideon association is trying to establish in all its members, each man to be ready to do God's will at any time, at any place, and in any way that the Holy Spirit leads.
Here is what the website says of their history:
Gideons International wrote:In the autumn of the year 1898, John H. Nicholson of Janesville, Wisconsin, came to the Central Hotel at Boscobel, Wisconsin, for the night. The hotel being crowded, it was suggested that he take a bed in a double room with Samuel E. Hill of Beloit, Wisconsin. The two men soon discovered that both were Christians, and that John Nicholson, as a 12-year-old boy, had promised his dying mother that he would read God's Word and pray daily. It had been his custom for many years to read the Bible before retiring for the night. They had their evening devotions together, and on their knees before God the thoughts were given which later developed into an association.

On May 31, 1899, they met at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, concluded to band Christian commercial travelers together for mutual recognition, personal evangelism, and united service for the Lord. They decided to call a meeting in Janesville, Wisconsin on July 1, 1899, in the Y.M.C.A.

Only three men were present at that meeting: John H. Nicholson, Samuel E. Hill, and Will J. Knights. They organized with Hill as president, Knights as vice president, and Nicholson as secretary and treasurer. Much thought was given to what the name of the association should be, and after special prayer that God might lead them to select the proper name, Mr. Knights arose from his knees and said, "We shall be called Gideons." He read the sixth and seventh chapters of Judges and showed the reason for adopting that name.
