[quote="StormbringerThat's the truth. I think the US isn't doing this solely for the good of the Iraqi people, we need a real, secular Arab ally, but they'll denifite greatly none the less.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the secular society created by Saddam's regime turns out to be the biggest help in making a modern, westernized Iraq?

So? I there are protests for everything over there right now. What's going to matter is what actually happens not what grabs the headlines this minute.

Iraq is far more secular than any other nation in the Middle East and once they get their feet back under them I doubt they'll find a theocracy so attractive. Assuming a stable and reasonable secular government can be put in place I don't think that they'd head down the road of theocracy.

It was secular because of Saddam. Now that he's gone, the 60% Shi'ite majority could easily vote in the mullahs. The biggest protests have been for an Islamic state- not for anything secular. They see Chalabi as nothing but a puppet and the US as an occupying force. Jeez, it's been little over a week and they're already telling the US to get out.

Because 1500 people protested? That's nothing, and everything I've seen indicates that the majority of the population doesn't mind American forces being present
