Mammalian Evolution

i was just wondering where mammals came from, specifically, and how the mammary glands developed, because i've heard they might be an evolution from sweat glands (the platypus still sweats milk through it's skin, and lays eggs, it's one of the oldest mammals i think) , but then i thought....there are several mammals that don't sweat, like pigs and dogs...so what's going on?

OK, mammals arised from reptile-like animals called synapsids (please remember that Reptilia is not a real class)

Yes, the mammary glands are modifed sweat glands, and yes, monotremes secrete milk from their skin.

I don't know for certain, but presumably the non-mammary sweat glands were deactivated in canid/pig evolution, probably to reduce water loss in arid environments.

The same goes for humans though, doesnt it? I've seen cats that pant, but i would have thought that'd be quite inneficient for something as fuzzy and warm as a cat.

Maybe they wash themselves instead of sweating?

anting is more efficient than you may think. There is less water loss than sweat, and the mouth and lungs have good survace area for losing heat through evaportion.

Men have nipples because in the womb, you are female until proven male...as it were, the proof being the hormones dealt out to you by your mother, as dictated by your genes.
