Well, I've got a 32" longsword, nothing fancy, but I like it. Only other thing I'd want is a shorter sword for my other hand, maybe 24".
The one I have and the one I want look very similar to this model
http://legacyforge.net/Ridge.html
With different lengths, obviously.

I seem to remember an episode of Conquest that had to do with fencing, where the demo crew used real, authentic swords.

I'd want a true longsword, what most people now call two-handed swords. There's a few schools in America that teach medieval swordfighting with them, and I know the five stances. It's actually a stabbing weapon (not slashing), and it's hard to deflect because of its size.
Or a slightly shorter sword. Length and balance are similar to a baseball bat. Don't remember the name, but I've handled one and it was very nice. My ex-girlfriend collects swords and daggers, though I know how to use them better than she does.

okok, i´ll stop posting bad puns for today.
Contrary to popular belief, steel swords aren't very cumbersome at all. Actors are often instructed to swing their swords to make them look heavier than they actually are. A typical medieval one-handed sword weighed around a kilo, and the largest twohanders (up towards 200cm long) seldom more than 4½.Darth Wong wrote:Movie swords are made of aluminum, which is why they swing them around so easily. Oh, and the term "broadsword" is from around the 16th century and refers to "normal" swords as opposed to the thin rapiers. "Broadsword" is not a specific sword type as such.
This is a replica of a german bastard sword from around 1520, made by Del Tin. Very pretty-shiny-killy-cutty-stabby.

Since I am a member of the Society For Creative Anachronisms (www.sca.org), I have seen many a find dagger and sword, and I know many swordsmiths and weapons merchants. Unfortunately, my swords were left with my despicable ex-hubbie. Why? Because he chased me out of the house with on and I never went back to get them.
But I digress... Here's something very much like what a good freind of mine had http://store.museumreplicas.com/cgi-bin ... storefront She wore it down the front of her Italian Ren, with only the pummel showing as a ... umm... cleavage accent. Men were often amazed when she pulled it out of the bodice, because there was nothing sewn in the dress to hold it in place except for ... umm... well... The dress was made to create Deep Deep Cleavage, ok? The tension between skin and bodice held the dagger in place.
Nowe, Lady Kathryn MacLuing wears far mor' comf'table clothin', an' this t'was m' wee knife, here. http://store.museumreplicas.com/cgi-bin ... storefront O' course, mine t'wasna as fancy, bu' it ha' a bonny edge on it. A fin' knife fer fightin', an' ye cou' use it off han' as a parry, holdin' it backwards 'longside yer arm.
(Which is how I finally stopped my ex-hubbie, by drawing the dirk, flinging the sheath at him as I reversed my grip, and then waited for him to swing at me. To this day, I still believe that I would have stepped in blocking his swing with the dirk blade, and then rammed the point into his chest. I think he saw that in my eyes, too.)
But, anyways... Swords. One that I wished Museum Replicas still had was called the 'Elf Sword'. It was seemingly based off a comic called "ElfQuest" by WaRP Graphics, where the hero's sword was a sharply curved crescent 'moon', with cutting edges on both sides. Very wicked little sword.
I could go on... and on... and on... Especially about how beautiful a Damascus steel sword is, and how I've seen several swords forged 'on site' at an event displayed for buyers to admire. I've even seen a merchant take one of his swords, hold it by the hilt approx. 2ft above a sheet of 16g steel, and when dropped the sword impaled the ground under the steel without harming or dulling the blade. Swweeeet sword! Great balance iirc.
*sigh* Okay... Sir Nitram's asking me if I'm having orgasms here, so I should stop.

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

I think I own that sword. Or something very much like it. I could never pick a favorite. I like them all for their suited purpose.Eleas wrote:Swords can be beautiful beyond belief. If you could afford a sword, any at all, which would it be?
This is the one I would pick, methinks.

Wow...that's so awesome... with the blade made of ultrasharp unbreakable... transparent plastic? But then again, the choice of material could make it very useful for... uhm... holding it up in front of your eyes and still see what your enemy is up to! A stroke of genius. Really.
The little decorative holes in the blade also looks great for fucking up the balance and the grip doesnt look very comfortable.
This surely belongs in the Night of the Ugliest Swords I Ever saw IV

Well, no. But I would buy a sword that actually looked like a sword. And then theres beauty in functionality.aphexmonster wrote:First of all, all blades on that site that aren't a dark color look transparent. Second of all, its just nifty looking... but i suppose you would only by a sword for its ballance and kill capabillity in this day and age anyways
If I want a ninjatoy, I go to the toy store. Much more reasonable prices. Come to think of it, my little brother has a sword that looks a bit like that he never plays with anymore since he got sucked into Starcraft. Except his has got little blinking lights as well. Ill try to get a pic of it for you in my upcoming thread "Kids stuff we think look cool".

Damn Lady Trevor beat me to linking Museam Replicas Limited. Thats were I saw the Falchion I fell in love with, and haven't been able to find anything similar to on the net.
German Falchion. 1300-1350, designed to pierce chain mail, were so popular, most of them have been broken from use, and few ones from that time period exsist.
But I also love the power of the Falcata.

Modern metallurgy has been combined with ancient techniques and artistry to create the finest katana available! Years of research and hard work has resulted in a new set of swords that are simply the best in the market by far. This sword is made using the same techniques of the sword makers of Old Japan. The steel is folded, forged and refolded many times to produce a blade of superb toughness and beauty. It is then tempered edge down, after being covered in clay, to produce an edge of extreme hardness, while maintaining a blade tough enough to stand the shock of combat without bending or breaking. This tempering produces a real hamon. Not content with duplicating the original method of making a katana, modern, ultra tough steel is used. This steel was developed in Sweden after many years of work, and is now licensed to be made in Japan. Worthy to be called "The Soul of the Samurai". All of the sword fittings are of exquisite workmanship and detail. The grip is real ray skin, with traditional cord wrapping. Scabbard is highly lacquered wood. The tsubas are works of art. This is a blade fit for a warlord or a shogun. Overall- 40 3/4" * Blade- 29 3/4". #1448...$1300

I'd prefer a whip, but a katana will do nicely.

Well, Katanas are overrated anyway.
I prefer double edged swords. I am practicing atm with a Greatsword (185cm, 3,8kg) and from time to time with 2 Short swords (Dual wielding is hell to learn).
And yes, Stainless Steel is crap. Get a Carbon Steel, if you buy over Internet. Far better, go to a Weaponsmith near you and let him make one for you (I am lucky enough to have a great smith just 30 min away)

You actually can buy prop-replicas of them, and they're pretty reasonably priced from what I can tell. Wow, are you people going to be jealous. So many katana fans here.
My fiance's dad (they are Japanese) has a good friend (he is a good friend on mine too) who happens to be a monk in Nagano. When we go to visit him, we always exchange gifts and this monk (his name is Hide) is a very generous man. Two years ago, he gave me a katana which now hangs next to my book case.
