Claymores are the ultimate swords. The only problem is you need to be a big bastard in the 1st place to weild one effectively. Claymores are what enabled some barely clothes unarmoured scots men to hand the english their asses on several occassions. Personaly i prefer my Katana however, isn't Ebay great.

Lets see how well you can use that sword when you have a couple arrows in you... 8)

Actually, you didn't have to be all that big... I've seen one used quite effectively by a 5'2" girl.

Contrary to popular belief, they don't weigh all that much... three-four pounds tops for a functional one. It's a longsword/greatsword with an exceptionally long handle.

As a big bastard, I can understand and appreciate this sentiment. Far too often have I had little guys come up to me and say things like, "Hey, let's swap-and-go," and they get their asses handed to them because they can't move my Claymore imitation. :) Wish I had a real one, though...

Anyone got one I can buy?

Yeah, a lot of people seem to think that European weapons are heavy, bulky and completely ungainly. Your average longsword only weighs around 3 pounds.

Well... obviously they're not as good as custom made. They are apparently rather good for the price point. I've seen a pic of one disassembled, and it apparently does have a full length tang.

What are the reasons for having such weapons? That is, I can certainly understand keeping them akin to a museum piece but can you really use them? Queen Salaron, you alluded to this in your post. Do people join clubs and use them on eachother? I can't really see full contact with razor sharp blades though. Are wooden swords used?

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might if they screamed all the time for no good reason.

There are several types of "clubs" that teach how to use swords. Most are used for historical reinactments or at Faires and such. You train using wooden practice swords (or bamboo for some oriental swords). The "full contact" is not with sharpened blades. In fact, most states do not allow you to transport sharpened blades. That's why when you buy them, they are dulled.

A) Call me "Queen" again, and I'll show you just how razor sharp those blades are. :P

B) They're called LARP (Live Action Role-Play) groups. You assume a character and walk around renaissance fairs like you own the place. A guy I know took it a step further, and combined sword-collectors with LARPers, and made a medieval fightclub. There are really only 5 of us.

The reason he started it was because he was sick of using the crappy-ass wooden swords at ren fairs. We got a permit from the city to use the swords (we're licensed, too), so long as we use some sort of protection. Local metalworkers guildsman got wind of us, and donated his services in armor-making. Nothing huge, just some plate-mail, gauntlets and helms (Which have been personalized with spraypaint). We stop ourselves at disarming, cutting out all the fun of maiming blows.

The Super-ego is no fun. I'd much rather listen to my Id all the time. :)

Careful using the acronym LARP, Queeb. That usually means a Vamp group of pseudo-goths and pagans who are nothing but fakers.

Oh, and lay off XP. the B happens to be right beside the N.

The Dungeons and Dragons Club in Queens University Belfast take part in live action Role Plays. A guy i know from work is a member. The only problem is full armor and only rubber and plastic swords mean all the fun of actually hurting the geek you really dislake is prevented. The guy i know has a full scale replica of Frostmourne from Warcraft 3 as his weapon of choice. I might join, but i'll kick ass. I'm very good with a sword.

Bah, LARP....

I've spent years learning how to use such weapons properly....

Its entirely possible to fight with a pair of claymores at once....it takes a lot of co-ordination and skill, but it can be done....

It also takes a buttload of strength. Claymores are long and cumbersome.

I've done it myself, and to be honest I'm not the strongest person about....take into account the balance and momentum of the blade are part of the skill really.....

Point, and with the necessary skill, it isn't hard to weild two of any weapon.

My great-grandfather left me a WWI sword that doubled as a bayonet. Nice grip, fairly light. I'll take a picture and post it here tomorrow.
