In all honestly, though, I like the European swords more than the Asian varieties. I love the old cutlasses.

Well, no. But I would buy a sword that actually looked like a sword. And then theres beauty in functionality.

If I want a ninjatoy, I go to the toy store. Much more reasonable prices. Come to think of it, my little brother has a sword that looks a bit like that he never plays with anymore since he got sucked into Starcraft. Except his has got little blinking lights as well. Ill try to get a pic of it for you in my upcoming thread "Kids stuff we think look cool".
Meh, its clearly an argument of opinion

For a modern take on swords, Jerry Hossom makes a few versions of the Espada. They're incredibly light and well balanced and handle like you would not believe. They are made for combat use and will stand up to anything you can reasonably think of. In the hands of a skilled user it can easily take a limb off and then some, right through the bones in the arms or legs.

I was in the mall today and the local pointy-things shop had the Shards of Narsil and Glamdring, as well as a Ringwraith sword! All were near $400 though and I don't want to spend that much money on what is essentially a decoration :(

IIRC the falcata originates in the iberian area.

Hm, there are lots of weapons I could really enjoy using, but when it comes to practicality, I'd have to say something like this....

Image

No prizes for guessing where its from, but despite being from there it is a rather good design for my personal fighting style....I'd alter a few things of course...
Slightly altered quillons, a little larger.
I'd want more of a point at the tip than this sports.
Better materials all round, to be perfectly blunt....

There was a cheap knock off of this that I rather liked, but that I cant seem to find an image of right now.

Alternatively, I could be quite happy with something like this made in tougher materials...
Image

I also like Raven Armouries Snaga and Stormbringer, since someone already linked to one of thier pieces....but thier prices are astronomical.

All of these swords get messed up if you chop stuff enough... a super nice one seems like a waste.
Anyone know where to get some cheap expendable swords?

Can't speak for the others.

It actually traces it's roots back to an ancient Egyptian blade called a Kopesh. This design was spread by Alexander the Great into large parts of the world. In form, it's close to the Nepalese kukri dagger, and is designed mostly to chop at things (It's weighted in such a way to maximize the deepness of a cut, and the downward curve enables one to deepen a cut when pulling out.)

I'll have to take a look. If they're the real movie swords I'd love to ge tthem. They problem is I want a decent sword out of the deal not some cheap crap. That's why I'd prefer the Noble Collection ones.

Glamdring is listed at $202 (including shipping and handling) on Museum Replicas Ltd
Museum Replicas LTD wrote:Generations around the globe have grown up with a single legend, The Lord Of The Rings, an epic tale of a perilous quest to save humanity. Now about to become the motion picture trilogy of this generation, we are proud to feature three of the most sought after swords ever. Officially licensed and cast from the props used in the movies, each is forged from 420 J2 stainless steel and have solid metal hilts with antiqued silver finish. Rat-tail tangs. Each includes a wood grain display plaque. (A) Glamdring-“The Foe-Hammer” is carried by the great wizard Gandolf The Grey. Hilt is decorated with elvish writing. Leather wrapped grip. 475/8" overall. 355/8" blade. #1-546…$190 ($12.95 s/h)
Still, you might want to read up on swords and tempering before deciding to wail away with one of these swords, stainless steel or not.

They should have any of the other LOTR swords on that site including Broken Narsil.

I kind of like Arwen's sword but alas there's no picture on that site. :(

Stainless steel is NOT good for weapons, spring steel is far better....the chromium content of shiny swords reduces the strength of the blade by making it more brittle.

UC - United Cutlery, this in itself should give a hint of the quality of the blades.
