In LotR, the swords used by Viggo Mortensen(Aragorn) are all real steel full weight swords(no live edges of course). He wanted to use thoes rather than the light aluminum ones so that his movements would be as realistic as possible, including the fatigue slowing that almost all swordsmen experience in full on combat.

According to the commentary during the filming of the final battle sequence aginst the Uruk-Hai in FotR, Viggo got a bit over excited and beaned a number of the costumed stunt crew.....none of whom took it personally.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. A carbon steel version of Hadhafang would be nice.

A dao would also be nice.

I wouldn't say no to a Falcata.

Well... They are the only officially licensed replicas of the LOTR swords...
That they may be....doesnt change anything about the actual quality. That and UC tend to use rat-tail tangs.

The LotR swords on Museam Replicas Limited are decorations entirely, thats why they are made of weaker metals, their normal swords are mostly made of carbon steel.

I've seen that noted of Glamdring though now mention of it on Narsil or Arwen's sword. What exactly does that mean?

I'm not planning on using one but I'd prefer to get something of decent quality.

I'm not entirely sure but I think the tang is the part of the sword that goes into the handle. Rattail is discriptive in that those type of tangs are thiner, like a rat's tail, so there is less metal connecting the handle to the actual blade.

I couldn't find any pictures of swords without their handles but here's a photo of some knife blades. Knife Blades

Makes sense. So really it's something that's only going to matter if I want to actually use it.

I have a hard time finding a favourite sword type, since most sword types through history were rather specialized.

But when it comes to appearance, I prefer those middle-eastern scimitars, tulwars and yataghans. They are very elegant.

The links I provided are from SwordsOnline.com, you can buy them from there.
Museum Replicas has them as well.

I think that you're supposed to display TLotR weapons--I don't think that they ever thought someone would actually use one of them, and risk damaging it.

Keevan_Colton wrote:Stainless steel is NOT good for weapons, spring steel is far better....the chromium content of shiny swords reduces the strength of the blade by making it more brittle.
You have to be careful with spring steel though. If you're gonna go with spring steel, avoid cheap knock-offs, as, for one thing, they like to recycle the spring steel from old trucks and military vehicles. And, for another thing, they don't really temper the steel properly, so the spring steel in a cheap sword still thinks it's a leaf spring from a truck, which causes all manner of stress in the steel. That has a result of giving the sword an overall hardness that is much, much less than that of an equally inexpensive stainless steel blade.

And if you must go stainless, then go with 440 or 440C (C is much better. Much higher carbon content.) grade stainless steels.

And if you've got lots of money lying around go with a particle metallugy super steel. S30V stainless has better impact toughness, strength, and hardness than 440 and takes a much sharper and finer edge due to the better grain structure. Its properties are similar to A2 tool steel except that it's stainless while A2 is a rusting carbon steel. Thing is Jerry Hossom's the only guy I know who's making swords from S30V and he ain't taking orders right now.

Looks like the blade is notched along the top to allow the bullet through.

Schiavona (#1-034)
The Schiavona is one of the most beautiful of all the basket-hilt swords. Originally used by the Slavic Mercenaries hired by the Doge of Venice, the Schiavona proved to be such an effective and attractive sword that it was soon in use all throughout Europe. Interestingly enough, in Drummond's famous book, "Ancient Scottish Weapons", there are several Schiavonas, many of which are of the style that we have decided to replicate. This sword, hand forged in India by Windlass Steelcrafts, has a steel basket, and the traditional brass catshead pommel. Both basket and blade are blued. The single-edged blade is well balanced and well tempered. The Schiavona, like its contemporary, the Claymore, was a cut and thrust sword, and although used alone, frequently a light buckler or target was also employed. Leather scabbard included.

I want to add that to my collection. Yum.

The end of the blade is cut and a barrel exit is visible. There is another version too with a semi-auto and not a revolver, they are cool looking but I'd hate to see one used on a real battlefield.

Never could fire the gun in FFVIII either.
