Martial Arts
Just as a question, who has taken what martial arts on the board? I personally have:
Karate (don't remember type or sensei, was only about 8)
Aikikai Aikido (Chiba-Sensei, as taught by Recht-Sensei)
Tae Kwon Do (Sun Tok Choe's Do Jang, taught by Dr. Tripp)
and will probably be taking Shao-Lin in the spring semester.

Why isn’t that ever an issue of politics? Because you don’t live in a democracy. You live in a plutocracy. Money rules.
Judo
Tae Kwon Do
Those 2 gave me the basics in distance, footwork, balance, and timing that have served me well over the years. I can barely remember any of the techniques I've learned anymore, much of what I've learned has since been adapted and bastardized.
Kali
A Filipino martial art that uses sticks and knives in addition to trapping and joint-locking. Loads of fun but my reflexes aren't fast enough or I suck too much and I kept getting whacked with the damn sticks. Also quite useful for self defense.
Krav Maga
Of all the martial arts I've learned, this is the one that suits me the best. Simple and brutally effective, as well as being easy to learn and keep in practice. Joint breaks are my friend, you can't fight back if I've broken your elbow, popped your shoulder, and stomped your knee out.

Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

I did a little Karate long ago, then tried a freestyle art that was mostly a blend of kali and kickboxing...then moved onto the freestyle with weapons. Most of the stuff I've done hand to hand since has been based around trapping and nerve work that aids with weapons.

Judo back in 1996-7. I was awful at it and I don't remember any of it. But I wouldn't mind learning Sambo after seeing it in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance (Cyrax is cool).

it really depends on. i went to the kickboxing club once because my then girlfriend went there regularlily. i boxed 3 other guys who had all been training for longer than me and i was better then all 3 of them.Hethrir wrote:i can tell you, i'd never get in the ring with a kick boxer i'd get my ass kicked. i knew a second dan black belt kickboxer. I didn't even muck around with him. too scared of being beat severely.
i think it might be because kick boxing is more complex. ít´s harder to learn, so the boxer will be better in the beginning because he concentrates on training his hands whereas the kickboxer has to concentrate on hands plus feet.
after several years of training the kickboxer will probably be able to defeat the regular boxer who has trained for the same time because he can then actually use his additional moves effectively.

I'm doing Ninjutsu, or Ninpo Taijutsu or Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (it has three names now, you know). And I can tell ya that it's perfect for selfdefense (that's basically all that it is), but we also learn some swordfighting and lately we've been doing a lot of backflips (which I sooooo suck at) and other cool stuff you see in all those ninja movies (but I suck at all that acrobatic stuff. Allthough I can do a "kip up" sometimes) .

9 years of Traditional Kung Fu (Shaolin Kung Fu is not really the correct name).
In the last 2or 3 years, i felt a tendency to concentrate on power attacks and nerve-spot attacks. I really have to pick up the acrobatic line a bit more again otherwise it wont look rounded anymore.
I still think Kung Fu is one of the most versatile Martial Arts Forms out there, despite having seen most other in action.
Kung Fu is not a tournament Martial Arts form, so our Master got us some (many) entries to open tournaments (usually full contact). Well it hurts but is kinda funny.

Forgot about wrestling. I did 3 years of amateur wrestling in highschool and learned some very useful stuff there.Superman wrote:I have taken Tae Kwon Do for seven years and I wrestle. Submission wrestling is lots of fun!

As the official Aikido Monkey it would come as complete suprise to you guys that I actually practice Aikido on a regular basis . I practice with the McMaster Aikido Club which studies the Yoshinkan style (Soke Shioda) as opposed to The Dark's Aikikai style. I also take a bastardized Brazillian jujitsu/kick-boxing/clinching style of martial arts. This style has a wide range of instructors. We have Karate, Kick-boxing, and Russian Sambo instructors which all add their own flavour to the course.
Aerius, I've gone to watch a Krav Maga demo and it looked very brutal and effective!
