While he should sue all those other people, he may have a genuine case against the bullet manufacturer (depending on how powerful the bullet is. what the company's guarantee is, etc.).

What crap, unless the bullet is guaranteed to a kill a Lion instantly regardless of impact point or range, not what I'd call likely, he has no case. Big game rounds are highly specialized and this moron should have packed the right ammo. Its his own fault, I wish the Lion had killed him.

Stupid. I might understand if the bullets misfired or were defective, but this is just stupid.

Favourite quote: "The lion died while chewing on my client"

The guy shoots a lion at 30 yards while standing out in the open and expects not to get hurt. Folks, anybody who gets within 30 yards of a lion out in the open and assumes the lion will die before touching him is an idiot and deserves to die.

It depends on the company's guarantee. If they said anything about stopping a lion on that range, then he just might be able to sue. I think it would be more sensibile of him to sue the game warden or something.

OK, if I understood that article correctly the bullet wasn't faulty. If so, I don't understand how the guy could have a legitemate suit againts the bullet manufacturer.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/458Win.htm
Federal offers quite a wide range of different bullet types in .458 Win, if this guy used the wrong type of a bullet for hunting lions he can hardly blame Federal for his own fuck-up.

What an idiot.

On the other hand, the guy does have 30 years of big game hunting experience, so maybe it was a simple mistake on his part, picking the wrong type of ammo...though come to think of it, after hunting for 30 years, you'd think that the guy would know that lions have thin skins...

I feel bad for the lion. Though I'm glad as well... it died doing what it loved... chewing on a moron that wasn't swift enough to get away. It lived the lion dream.

The guy needs to cram it.

From the article:
He suffered permanent damage to his legs, arm and back, said his attorney, Louis Franecke. Rohwer was trying a new type of ammunition on Aug. 11, 2000, the day of the attack, he said.
Before the lion reached Rohwer, who has since returned to hunting, he shot it a second time, Franecke said.
Well that was pretty stupid of him, trying out a new ammo at point blank range without knowing its effects, and failing to have a backup firearm loaded and ready with proven ammo in case his new stuff failed. Guy should've been killed & eaten if there was any justice.

The article makes it sound like he was using big-game bullets on a thin-skinned animal.

Logic dictates that you don't use armor-piercing (that's basically what it is) munitions for anti-personnel (or anti-lion, nearly the same thing) applications UNLESS YOU HAVE A BACKUP WEAPON LOADED WITH STANDARD AMMO! That goes even to those l33t d00dz who can make perfect headshots at any range!!! OMFG what a d00f.

Here's a product description from Federal:
Trophy Bonded Bear Claw This legendary Jack Carter design is ideal for medium to large dangerous game and is loaded exclusively by Federal. The jacket and core are 100% fusion-bonded for reliable bullet expansion from 25 yards to extreme ranges. The bullet retains 95% of its weight assuring deep penetration. The bullet jacket features a hard solid, copper base tapering to a soft, copper nose section for controlled expansion.
It would appear that on first glance that he might have a case because Federal states that it's ideal for medium to large dangerous game.
However, any knowledgeable hunter will tell you that it's shot placement (assuming that you are using enough gun) that will stop game in its tracks.

A .458 WinMag is designed for short range big game hunting, so he had enough gun.

More details on shot placement here.

My opinion is that he missed the vital areas (perhaps because of the adrenalin flowing from having a lion charge at you) and is blaming Federal for his bad marksmanship.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier
