Bah. I was king of the 64 version. You simply could NOT mess with Kirby man. I was undefeated. I bestrode Hyrule Castle like a collossus. Three lvl 9s, in a team against me? No problem. All my friends in a team against me? I can dig it.Darth Yoshi wrote:Super Smash Bros. Melee. Fear my super grapple beam!

EH?!??!?! Diablo has a HUGE backstory to it! Did you actually read the books you found in the dungeons? There were at least 20 didn't sessions in there explaining how it all went down. Which is why they didn't bother slapping that part of it into D2 (not that it didn't already have its own stroy there), because you were supposed to already know that stuff.Seggybop wrote:Seiken Densetsu 3 (Super Nintendo)
Choosing character-types and then going through with other people and chopping everything up is similar to Diablo, except this game actually has a story.
Now the games aren't plot driven or anything. BUT they do have an enormous backstory to them thats well worth reading. Some pretty interesting stuff.

i liked the original, but i never liked melee, they made samus' screw attack suck -_-Darth Garden Gnome wrote:Bah. I was king of the 64 version. You simply could NOT mess with Kirby man. Super grapple beam more than makes up for the weakened screw attack. It homes, it's twice as long as the regular grapple beam, and it doesn't increase your vulnerability time. Besides, they gave her wall jump ability, and the grapple beam latches onto walls for 3 seconds. But I use the two Links. By simply standing still, their shields stop even Charge Shot.

Top 5 (no particular order)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) - unadulterated platforming goodness.
Bangai-O (Dreamcast) What's not to like about a game that combines giant robots with more missiles than you could ever conceivably fit into one battleframe and ludicrously cute (and sometimes disturbing) super-deformed character design? Nothing, that's what! Bangai-O gives you more bang for your buck than any other shooter, EVER.
Soul Calibur (Dreamcast): Sorry Super Smash Brothers, but Soul Calibur is a better game, even if you're a better party game.
Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast/GameCube): One of the best RPGs EVER. Extremely definitive of the "16-bit" style of role-playing game.
Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (Dreamcast): You must play in order to believe. Kinetic, frenetic and fun. Time to crunch steel. Or ferrous-reinforced fiberplast.

Can't believe none of you have mentioned Fronteir: Elite II. My top 10 would probably be, in no particular order:
Tetris - I don't need to say anything here.
Fronteir: Elite II - lots more scope than the original and simply incredible scale given that it ran on two 720Kb floppies. Once pointed at a star, opened the throttle wide open and left it for a few hours on full time compression to see if I really needed a hyperdrive to get between systems. Then there was a power cut. Bah. Only game I've played that comes close is Escape Velcoity on the Mac, but it's not in 3D, you can't fly round planets and it just doesn't feel the same.
Harpoon 3 (with the DB200 database) - great realism and strangely addictive with good gameplay despite graphics that wouldn't have stressed a ZX Specturm.
SimCity 2000 - it's kinda disturbing the amount of time you can spend as a virtual civil engineer.
Perfect Dark - GoldenEye, but with bots and more guns - woohoo!
Marathon 2 - better than Doom and weird story :^)
Myth II - I can't believe how nice it looked and ran on a low spec machine with software rendering.
X-Wing - I've never played TIE Fighter, so it may be better.
Halo - if you've played, you'll understand.
Cannon Fodder - I loved this game. Spend countless hours over many months playing and replyaing it on an Atari STE.

In no particular order...
- Sim City 2000: Still the best of the series, especially with the mighty FUND negative interest cheat. Its gameplay was superior compared to SC3K's and it doesn't suck up computer resources like SC4 does. Arcologies are fun, too.
- Civilization II: Excellent, repeatable gameplay. Civ3 was fun but corruption and the combat engine made it less enjoyable; I never played Civ1.
- TIE Fighter Collector's Edition: Great gameplay, it really made you feel like you were part of the Empire. The music was great for MIDI as well (and I had a Turtle Beach GM synthesizer at the time, too ). The boost to 640x480 VESA mode was good for it's time (The W95 version, alas, will not run on my machine).
- Doom: It's Doom, what more can I say?
- Wolfenstein 3D: It introduced me to the FPS genre and I still have fond memories of it.
- Total Annihilation: Still far and away the best ground-combat RTS I've yet played
- Homeworld: Great fun, and the integration with music was well-done. Adagio for Strings remains a favorite of mine.
