When to turn on headlights

Post by jegs2 »

Living up here in the Tacoma, WA area, we get our share of gray and rainy days. Since I've been up here, I've used my headlights more often than not. First, the law requires that anyone using their windshield wipers must also turn on their headlights, and unless you're a disciple of Rain-X like me, use of one's windshield wipers is quite common here. I've noticed that a great many folks around here tend to ignore that law. The attitiude of many seems to be that if they can see without the headlights, then they'll keep them switched off. My attitude is that while I can see fine, others might not be able to make out my vehicle in the gray haze, so I tend to leave my headlights turned on. When do you use your headlights?

Edit: My poll somehow vanished, so I'm putting it back in

If it's getting grey/dark and/or rainy (late afternoon), that's when I turn my headlights on- I did that today.

30 minutes prior to sunset is when you turn them on and 30 minutes after sunrise is when you turn them off. I also turn them on during any Fog, some times when it rains, and every time I take a road trip that lasts more then 30 minutes.

In our country you have to turn it up when:

- you're in not an inhabitated area
(even at max. visibility, it's quite useful especially if you have a grey car...)

- the street lights are on

- there's reduced visibility

I have daytime running lights on my truck so they are always on. but before I used them when visibility was reduced so I could see and others could see me.

It's a law here to turn them on when you are using your wipers (ie Rain, snow, sleet), but do you know how many idiots, especially in dark colored cars DON'T do that? For fuck's sake, if you can't see a goddamn WHITE car coming towards you in the weather, you might need your fucking lights on. [/rant]

Anyway, when I can't see cars, I know they can't see me, so I turn them on. And when it weathers and an hour before sunset.

If it's difficult for me to see other cars, I turn on my lights.

I drive mostly at night, so I turn my lights on all the time pretty much out of habit, even in broad daylight in clear weather.

My car has daytime running lights (though they can be turned off). I switch it to 'normal' power during the evening or if it is raining.

The system I use is this: when turning on the headlights will produce a visible change in the brightness of the in-cockpit displays, I turn 'em on. This leads me to turn them on usually towards the beginning of the end of the afternoon.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I leave my headlights on all the time when I'm driving. Namely because the law requiers the headlights to be on when the car is running.

I always turn my car's headlights on, even though it predates daytime running lights because I want to be sure that other people see me. It's hard enough as it is to see some cars on the hghway in broad daylight, let alone other conditions.

When visibility is bad (rain, snow, etc...) or when it's getting dark. How I wish Koreans would learn this simple rule.

What? You son of a... I hope you mean Korean FEMALES :-P

I remember I was driving from LA to Idaho, I started at night so I could get through the desert at night (it was still incredibly hot).. I was driving an old car I'd be leaving up there at a ranch.. no AC, a semi-broken radio that didn't accept the tape-CD conversion thing, so I made a game.

A little past Vegas I was becoming drowsy so I decided to memorize as far as I could on the road and turn off my headlights and drive in pitch darkness. The craziest moments were when I decided to do that while driving through the pass between the canyons somewhere North of Vegas. Hell, even with my lights on I had no clue where I was.
