Are you Experienced?

Post by jegs2 »

If you've a copy of "Experienced" by Jimi Hendrix, turn it on! The "experience" I'll be polling here is for the cracking of eggs. Eggs? Yes, eggs! When I was enlisted in the Coast Guard years ago, I spent nearly the last two years of my enlistment as a cook. One of the invaluable skills I learned was how to crack eggs with just one hand. When you're breaking open hundreds of eggs, that is a useful skill -- you folks who've worked in restaurants know of what I speak. So, as the lyrics of the song go, "Are you experienced?"

Two handed and always afraid that the damned thing will blow up in my hands. Damn I need a woman that can cook, otherwise I foresee many lonely microwave dinners in my future. Thanks Jegs for making me see that dismal future. :x

when i was in College i worked as a short order cook and every Tuesday Thursday and Sunday morning i would do the breakfast shift. in addition to fried eggs (several dozen a shift) i would have to prep the mix for scrambled eggs and omlettes. 7 or 8 dozen eggs into the steel vat. i actually had a system going where i would use 2 hands, one egg per hand. grab, crack, splat toss. the lives of thousands upon thosands of chickens ended before they could begin at my hands. bwo-ha-ha-ha!

I have tiny girl hands, so I'm not ashamed that I need two hands just to be able to hold both halves.

I can do it with one hand but I usually do it with two.

Oh and I do it against a flat surface so that egg shell doesn't get into the egg.

I can do it one-handed about 80% of the time. Every so often I'll drop the small end of the egg in, usually if I'm working with a particular pot I have that has a funky lip (I dropped it once).

Yeah i can do it one handed. I worked in kitchens while i was going my GNVQ and other post-high school qualifications. It's a neat wee trick you need to put pressure on the part you hit on the bowl, table top etc, but not too much pressure or it'll shatter in your hand. I had to stop working in kitchens because i was accused to homocidial intent. All i did was say to the chef "If you talk to me like that one more time i'll stab ye ya bastard" i just happened to be holding a large carving knife at the time.

Normally when I'm cracking an egg its just for the egg white, so I do it two handed. But if I'm making my japanese omelettes I do it with one hand.

Eggs are freaking nasty.

But, when it comes to cracking them for cooking, I'm pretty good. I can't imagine trying to crack one with two hands...I don't think I've ever seen someone try that. In my experience, you're either bad at cracking with one hand or you can crack with one hand.

I can do it with one hand, but at the cost of getting egg slime all over my fingers.
