True Legends
Recently reading up on Celtic mythology, I just had an astounding idea.
What legends would you think could possibly be true? You know what they say, that most legends are based on fact.
PLEASE DON'T MENTION BIBLICAL LEGEND AS I DO NOT WANT THIS TO TURN INTO YET ANOTHER BIBLE DEBATE. MENTION IT AND I STAB YOU WITH AN ICICLE INFINITE TIMES!!!

"Truth" is relative, factuality is not.
Many things are considered "true" while not factual. But to stay on topic, I would say many legends have a factual basis, often involving real people doing something, which gets magnified.
For instance Aryan-Dravidian conflict in the distant past formed the basis for a God-Demon story of two whole religions, and a third religion, Zoroastrianism, formed from the foundations of the legend.

Didn't they find Troy a decade or two ago? That's a pretty cool legend.

Ambrosius Aurelianus, or Aurelius, depending on the source, was well documented and known in his day. He was a post Roman king who probably only held sway in Southern Britain. He is remembered in Welsh by the name Emrys Wledig, and is quite distinct in the tradition from Arthur. Though the name indicates some connection to the Romano-British gentry, there is no indication that he was in any real way more Roman than Celtic. There is absolutely not one piece of evidence that any great leader named Arthur ever lived. If anything, he is a twisted memory of Northern princes form the Gaelic kingdoms, since Artuir is a native Irish name but has no Brythonic equivilent. There is no real Arthur.Durran Korr wrote:King Arthur is based on a real Roman leader; Ambrosius Aurelius, IIRC.
If that seems far fetched, just remember that Roland, who was by A.D. 1200 remembered as the great hero of France, beloved nephew of Charles the Great, who fought of the entire Moorish army to save the Franks and their King, was in fact a minor captain without noble title whose band was ambushed and slaughtered by some starving Basque peasants while returning to Gaul, and whose death was barley noted at the time.

Yes though at the time it went by the name of Thera, and the island didn't sink, it exploded, and covered a lot of the Earth in cloud, then what was left of it sank a bit.paladin wrote:Atlantis. I think the site is on the Greek island of Santorini.

The legend of Bagger Vance is undoubtedly true.
Even though I would never watch such a boring POS film about FUCKING GOLF. I just thought I'd talk about some movie I'd never want to see.

As for true legends, I have a feeling that the legend of Atlantis has some root in reality. It most probably refers to the Minoan culture on Crete, but deep inside I want to believe that a great civilization once existed upon a large island-continent in the Atlantic Sea - even though I know that literal interpretation of the Atlantean legend probably not is a good idea.

Here it is, the modern island of Santorini, formerly Thera, the big gap in the middle is evidence of a volcanic eruption years ago. That wiped out the Theran civilisation.
The story was picked up by the Egyptians, who then told it to Plato, from there we get Atlantis.

Ancient Thera is basically the same culture as Minoan Crete.Gandalf wrote:

Robin Hood was real. Or at least the basis for him was. A druid that lived in the Sherwood area.
The revolution is successful, but survival depends on drastic measures. Your continued existence represents a threat to the well-being of society. Your lives means slow death to the more valued members of the colony. Therefore I have no alternative but to sentence you to death. Your execution is so ordered.

And since I noticed that you were reading up on Celtic mythology... yes, William Wallace was real, and yes, he was eight feet tall and could shoot fireballs from his eyes.
