Damned fuckers. Makes me mad to hear of it. And the person in that story, real or not, didn't have the advantage of being a tall, strong guy (a good deterrant in any case agianst bullying).

If that story's even half true, I can only hope that person becomes a successful CEO later in life and has the delicious opportunity of having her former aggressors under her employ.

You are sure this is a true story?? To me, it simply sounds too awful to be true. And if it is, then I now have a morally legitimate reason not to be religious.

To my knowledge, it's all true. I have no reason to suspect that the person who originally wrote it was lying.

Do remember, however, that this is about Fundies. Being religious in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but when you accept anything on a level that results in this sort of evil and abuse, it is dangerous.

As I said in my post, 'real or not'. In other words, I could accept this kind of violence being performed on people because of religion, especially in the American South, but nowadays if even a gay guy gets mobbed and beaten *once* it tends to get national media attention. Cumulative beatings of this nature I'd expect we'd notice in the form of lawsuits or whathaveyou. One call to the ACLU or otherwise and the whole school would be in the crapper.

Today, maybe, but 15-20 years ago?

Besides, not all the beatings of gays in Texas are televised on the national media. Homosexuality is also a bit of a controversy, hence it will sell newspapers or air time. Atheism isn't so eye-catching. School beatings happen regularly in just about any school you could mention. It looks like most of the town was "in on it", and so help from a benevolent third party seems rather unlikely, no matter how much we may wish for it.

Also note that the situation at home wasn't particularly stellar either. The mother simply refused to believe it was happening.

Incredible...

I grew up in a relatively rural part of Maryland, and for high school I went to a conservative private prep school. I never encountered they kind of shit this girl went through...none of the kids, even the religious ones, seemed to care at all that I wasn't religious. I was elected student body president my senior year, in fact.

But this is eye-opening and reminds me that I probably existed in an anomolous situation. Still, I don't blame the kids as much as I do the adults. Kids are assholes, that's just the way it is. Unless there is some strict discipline invoked, they will always commit acts of cruelty and malice, but usually out of just being immature and not knowing better. But the teachers and counselors knew better, and they let it happen. Fuck them all. They have no business holding their jobs and being responsible for kids. They should be in jail for gross negligence and formenting an atmosphere of hate and violence.

The funny thing is that even a fundimentalist should be able to figure out that from the events after the binding of Issac in Genesis, namely Abraham's bargaining with god at Sodom and Gemmorah, the bible ENCOURAGES people to question god and the bible! Think about it:
Around the time that the religion began, there were most likely many zealotrous religious groups. Abraham was actually a sheep when he first discovered it! The whole event reguarding the binding of his own son for sacrifice opened his eyes up to the fact that he shouldn't follow blindly, and therefore he was right out arguing with the deity when it was trying to destroy the cities.

The events may not be true or accurate, but I personally think the message is quite clear. Then again, I don't know how bastardized a translation those school kids were reading. I'm sure some things are lost when you translate if from the vernacular through numerous languages to English.

I can fully believe that something like this can happen. I once knew a guy from Texas who whole heartly believed that Texas was "Gods Country." and argued it with a passion. It's no surprise to me that such extreme hatred towards athiests could exist, especially in Texas.

I've heard several stories just like this, each one still makes me angry.

I can understand how the guys in slayer and marilyn manson can be pissed off with christianity for like 20 years and make money from that hatred.

Now none of the kids around me knew what an atheist was, but some of them remembered that word and asked others. Like their parents, who warned them to stay away from me. And one little girl asked her Southern Baptist minister, who told her that "Atheists aren't even human, don't treat them with the kindness you would show a dog." Coming from a person in a trusted position, this bit of 'wisdom' spread quickly.
Not exactly following the teachings of Christ, but then a great many people who claim to be Christians will find themselves in Hell:

Matthew 7: 15 - 23:

15"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

I'm not at all surprised something like this happens from time to time, even if they weren't southern babtists.

I've heard about such stories before, seen similar things happen, and see little flashes of it in Christians every now and then under provocation. Granted, your average Christian won't lash out like that normally, but under pressure they'll reveal those true colors. Becasue in the end, reaching for their selfish heavenly bliss goes above liking their own species. Doesn't matter if you're their friend, family, or loved one, because in the end you're not their 'neighbor', and they don't have to love you anymore than they have to be rational, to appease their biblical dogma.

It hurts to realize it, but I was never really surpirsed by it .

Way to flex those reading comprehension skills, Shep. She did try to fight back. Hell, she could probably even beat most of them one on one. Problem is, unless you're the bastard child of Bruce Lee and Sigourney Weaver, you're not going to be able to fight off three or more people ganging up on you.

Try at least reading the whole post, if not the whole thread, before shooting your mouth off.

Exactly. Some may claim to be reighteous Christians, spreading their version of the Word. This person also apparently missed the part about peace and non-violence to others. Heck, the Bible doesn't tell of Jesus going about beating up sinners, it tells of Him going about teaching others about God in a non-violent manner.

Some people anger me.

Of course, some people also anger me when they take the actions of a few and apply those to everyone, in this case, the actions of a few outrageous extreemists who were lookign for a way to beat up the kid, and applying that to all Christians, or, more specifically, Southern Baptists. I know plenty of Southern Baptists who would never THINK of doing this.

So quit it with the wide stereotypes, people, as it makes you as bad as the worst extreemists.
