Any good stories?

Post by Gandalf »

Does anyone here have any good gaming stories?, most of mine have been told in other threads, but I'm sure with the gaming past of all the people here there must be something.

Playing RTCW once, I was a medic, and we were playing on the Beach Assault map. Me and two others are guarding a bunker, or to be more precise, i'm guarding the bunker, because the two other morons are to busy teamkilling each other. When one of them dies, he'll respawn, come back, and start the fight over again. Since i'm a medic, I decide to resuscitate them occasionally, while holding the bunker at the same time. (Ie dodging grenades, stopping the allies from getting through the wall etc). It was definately the strangest moment I have ever had when playing Wolfenstein...

We have a bragging rights thread already, actually. Despite the fact that it started off FPS-centric, you can go here and regale others with tales of bravery and coolness. :)
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

I posted some tabletop RPG-based stories over at Fanfiction a while back. Mostly exploits of my players, really, though I like to think I made them earn it.

There was the time my city in SimCity caught on fire.

Oh, and there was this one time, in a FPS, I killed someone with a shotgun.

There was also that time I toasted Morgan Industries with a Singularity planetbuster in SMAC. 8)

Oh. Never played it, have little motivation to.

I would think that anyone who's heard of Alpha Centauri knows it was a Sid Meier game though. I don't think he needs to be mentioned in the title. Unless there was another game called Alpha Centauri that came out recently and could stand to confuse people.

It's like saying Bram Stroker's Dracula or Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. All the movies are based on the same books. But putting the authors name before it is giving them full credit.

Yes, but as far as I know, there are no derivatives by which to confuse people. It's almost like an ego thing for him. Sid Meier's Gettysberg, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri...

Even the arguably biggest ego in all of the computer gaming world didn't title his games "Derek Smart's Battlecruiser Millenium".

Point. It probably is an ego-stroking thing. You know how competitive the gaming market is. It's really too bad that Wizards owns three quarters of the table top market.

While playing homeworld with a friend we alied against the computer.
I then sent my main fleet to the computer's mothership, also sent
small forces to my friends mothership and his carrier group. After
this I destroyed the computer than terminated the alliance and
started killing his mother ship and his carrier group, after they
were dead he had one more carrier that was hanging around
his mothership that I had to hunt down a bit, but I won.

I was playing CS once... Managed to sneak up behind the enemy team, and took out 5 guys with an MP5. Ran out of ammo for the last one and had to knife him.

I think every FATASS sortie was a story, somehow. Probably because no matter how the assault was planned(Skiing, a maneuver common to everyone who knew Tribes, aerial assaults, or just walking), I always was at the rear of the group, and I always found some poor sniper to take my frustrations out on. Quite often because the dumbass forgot that Juggernaughts can take dozens of shots to the head.

Yeah, no kidding. The really good RPGs and rules systems get passed up for a rules system which is still some twenty years out of date.

Speaking of, have I ever directed your attention to Tribe 8, by Dream Pod 9? It's rather different from White Wolf stuff, but it's a damn fine setting and a sweet, simple rules system.

Core Silhouette (the new version of Silhouette rules for all the DP9 universes) comes out in just one and half more weeks, along with Core Command. I can't wait! :D

Oh, and of course, since Dream Pod 9 is a small, independant company, they made all of their rules D20 compatable, for easy conversions to the D20 system. :|

I don't like it that much, but it's a smart move from a marketing position, since the only games that really sell these days have a D20 logo stamped on the cover.

I hate d20. DESPISE it.

Never played any DP9 stuff, but have heard of it. I want my d6 Star Wars back. I play a bi-weekly V:tM game. However, my favorite system is the original Deadlands system. It works so well. And the use of playing cards in a Wild West system just is so sweet!

Me vs Utsanomiko in Ghost Recon.

I have the crazy notion that the RPG could be used against people as well as tanks.

I was right.

I tolerate it. Barely.

Silhouette uses D6s, and the cinematic rules are great fun (Script Immunity, Existential Angst, the W.O.O. Factor (Weapons Out of Ordnance-the almost infinite ammo rule), and improved critical successes). In two weeks, I'll let you know how Core Silhouette is, along with Core Command. Using both, you could probably easily recreate the Star Wars universe (Core Command is an epic space-fantasy type of thing, much in the same vein as Star Wars).

Heh, visions of Bret Maverick come to mind at that thought. :)

Here's some info on Tribe 8 if you're interested. In fact, they have a Free Demo Game in PDF format that you can look through to give you a basic feel for the rules and the setting. 8)
