For myself, I'd rather be raped than murdered if there are no alternatives, but the other guy would live the lest of his life as as a total cripple (as in having no properly functioning limbs due to pulverized joints) when I got my hands on him.

As for loved ones, as horrible as it would be, while rape leaves permanent trauma (psychological at least), death is a permanent end, permanent loss of that person in your life. The latter (the painful variety of it) would be in the menu for the offenders when I got my hands on them.

I also prefer to have other people hurt and try to comfort than getting hurt myself. It is basic survival.

On the other hand I would rather get myself raped / murdered than having my hypothetical child raped or murdered.

Having my S/O have it done to him. It would be worse if he were murdered because then I would have to live with that. The raping is a bit more of a grey area, because if it happened to me, I know I would be able to tell him about it, and he could help me through it.. And vice versa.. so if the question is "which is worse for me," then I think that the raping would be worse if it happened to me, to be honest, especially since between the two of us, I am the more sensitive one and I am easier to traumatize in that way, I think.

They're equal, really, but it's a piss-poor question.

Are we assuming that I just got home and found my wife dead? Or am I being forced to choose to have myself or her killed? The problem I have, and have always had, with these kinds of questions is that they don't explain the situation in which the choice exists. An intelligent person doesn't just make the decision to preserve himself over his SO in all cases, and then run with that - the need to preserve is balanced on the actual and current state of affairs.

I mean, even if a voice from the heavens called down and said, "Before the day is out, one of you will be raped and murdered", I'd STILL be concerned with finding a way to cheat it, not musing over which I'll feel worse about if it actually happens.
