Guinan

Post by FaxModem1 »

What exactly is Guinan, I mean, she is very old(at least 500), she knows when something goes wrong so(she knew about Sela being part Picard's fault, she knew about Crusher having problems, so she went to her witha faked injury.) she is there to help. She really hates Q. So what all do we know about her?

She is an El Aurian. She belongs to the same race as Soren. Umm, her home world was assimilated by Borg... ummm... Yeah, that's it.

I don't know; she has some sort of intuition. She also seems to have the ability, or at least appear to have the ability, to defend herself against Q.

Didn't seem to help them much with the Borg. So it seems their abilities are more of the cerebral, rather than the blowing shit up, type.

She did have that big golden gun behind the counter and once joined Worf for firing practice.

She seems to be an empath of a level that makes Troi unemployed. She seems to sence a person is having bother just by looking up from her dishwasher for a second. I'm sure we'd have seen more of her if Paramount could have afforded to pay Whoopi more often.

Guinan is one of the more likable characters in TNG. I like how she is so mysterious--she makes the El-Aurians one of the coolest races in ST. But no, I can't add any more info on her.

I believe in "Yesterday's Enterprise", Picard claimed that her race has some kind of temporal awareness that others lack. She's sensitive to various unusual phenomena as a result. Some of her more notable feats: she can detect the proximity of Q, and she's aware of changes in the timeline, even if she's not exactly sure what changed.

Interesting. Startrek.com attributes her extra-sensory abilities to her short visit to the Nexus.

Irrelevant. We're talking about her and her specie's abilities. Not what toys she owns. No one said she didn't ever use guns, just that her race didn't have any that could hold off the borg.

I wonder if this means that the brain bug can now gestiate at a faster rate? Well, it could be both. We don't know how the NExus could have affected her alien physology.

Well, IIRC, time had no meaning in the nexus, and you can leave it to supposedly any time/place you want. Perhaps it leave images of the various time lines in the subconscious which is how Guinan can tell that a "time line is wrong" (Yesterday's Enterprise)? Just an idea I had.

Her kno.loge of the Q was gained when she met Q (ST:NG's Q) 200 years previous to ST:NG. Apperently the meating didn't go well. Her race was all but totaly assimilated by the borg, right before the Entaprise B was launched. Her knologe of the Space Time continuem is from the nexus, since it can be seen that she cannot tell the probloms in the time stream when Data is thrown back in time (Time's Arrow pt1+2 (before her enconter w/ the nexus)). Guinion's apperent telepathy is because of her knowloge of possible feutres and the timestream. Her race is natrualy long lived.

When Sorren was shooting that weird disrupter at Picard and the rest of the E-D crew he didn't look like he was a listener to me.

Maybe the only members of her race that people in the Alpha Quadrant have had contact with were the ones on the ships seen in Generations. There's also a possibility that the El Aurians (sp?) who had been in the Nexus made a big impression on the those they met, enough so that people stereotyped the whole species.

Then again, mabye they were "listeners" before the nexus. They did live a long time so they could afford to be patient and get the most out of their interactions with other races. :?

Maybe I missed something but what does "being sensitive to the time line" have to do with being good listners? There are lots of ordinary people who are good listners.

They are termed listeners and it does seem they have the ability to pry information from people, an El Aurian used this to become a con man on DS9, however it need not be some special ability as much as a learned ability honed by centuries of life or it could be some empath like power but I see no reason that the listening ability (if it exists) need depend upon exposure to the nexus.
