Disappearing Text

Post by IRG CommandoJoe »

Err...I'm not sure where to put this post, so I'll just stick it here. This might have been said already, but there's something odd on this page. If you put the mouse over the pic of the diagram that looks like this, Image, you will notice that the text on the right of it appears. Keep moving it on and off and it disappears and reappears. Hope I'm not bringing up something four billion years old, which is already known. :)

Huh?

Must be Internet Explorer or whatever browser you're using, because it's not supposed to do that.

It's not an IE problem, since it's not happening to me.

Might be something to do with your browser's CSS interpreter.

I see the problem occur in IE6.

Hmm... I'm using IE 5.5 without incident.

Just to confirm, happens to me too on IE6.

Also, the Star Wars Myth page isn't available by clicking on "myths", you have to go to "site index"...

Hmm... I'm using IE6 and I see nothing of the sort. Of course I turn off most 'features' whenever I install IE. So i don't think you have uncovered a bug, just a 'feature' of some sort.

Remember - Microsoft products are usually deliberately badly designed. The constant annoying "Program has committed an illegal action" messages you get as a Windows User have probably turned more people away from Microsoft than all of MacIntosh's ad campaigns together.

IE 6: Yes
Mozilla 1.3: No

So yes it's IE related.

Phoenix 0.5+ (nightly) is properly rendering
IE6 is not properly rendering

Changing the code block

Code: Select all

<p style="margin-left:10em;margin-right:10em;">
<a href="Con5.jpg">
<img SRC="Con5a.jpg" ALT="T-5" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>
At this point, Rebel tacticians state the Death Star
will clear Yavin in 5 minutes (click to enlarge)

<br clear=left><a href="Con0.jpg">
<img SRC="Con0a.jpg" ALT="T-0" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>

The Death Star in firing position, 5 minutes later
(click to enlarge)
<br clear=left>
to

Code: Select all

<div style="margin-left:10em;margin-right:10em;">
<a href="Con5.jpg">
<img SRC="Con5a.jpg" ALT="T-5" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>
At this point, Rebel tacticians state the Death Star
will clear Yavin in 5 minutes (click to enlarge)

<br clear=left><a href="Con0.jpg">
<img SRC="Con0a.jpg" ALT="T-0" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>

The Death Star in firing position, 5 minutes later
(click to enlarge)
<br clear=left>
</div>
It appears that something isn't properly cascading with his style sheets, as when I rename the file (I mirrored the relevant page via IE6) the problem goes away. Also, when I do this:

Code: Select all

<p style="margin-left:10em;margin-right:10em;">
<a href="Con5.jpg">
<img SRC="Con5a.jpg" ALT="T-5" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>
At this point, Rebel tacticians state the Death Star
will clear Yavin in 5 minutes (click to enlarge)</p><br clear=left>
<p style="margin-left:10em;margin-right:10em;"><a href="Con0.jpg">
<img SRC="Con0a.jpg" ALT="T-0" BORDER=0 height=36 width=80 align=left></a>
The Death Star in firing position, 5 minutes later
(click to enlarge)
</p><br clear=left>
It works as well.

Okay, I've narrowed down the issue, and it seems like IE6 barfs when it encounters that first <BR CLEAR=LEFT> command (see earlier post).

Hmmmmm...

W3C Validator results

I don't think I've seen so many errors in my life.

Netscape 4.x was never very good at generating HTML, anyway.

Hmm again...

With the doctype modifier fixed, the W3C validator displays only one error.

Can you tell that page was made a long time ago? For some reason, the lowercase HTML tags really bug me.
