ANZAC day...
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Obviously tens of thousands of British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops where more expendable then Predreadnoughts sent out specifically because they where expendable and the Allies had about fifty of them with nothing better to do.
The campaign for Gallipoli was among the worst of a war won by attrition, even if the numbers where not very large compared to those of the western and eastern fronts. Even on the Somme the Allies did gain some ground.

I've read an account of an ANZAC at Gallipoli, where he said that after a week of being in a trench with dysentery, he and his fellow soldiers were reduced to tears, "not because we were afraid, but because we were so dirty". A little considered horror of war. The whole damned thing was a nightmare that beggars imagination.

The worst part of the Gallipoli debacle was that Allied troops dug trenches when they could've advanced, IIRC. It's been a while since I did Aussie WW1 history (high school, actually).
