They said they do not regret asking question instead of just following blindly, which is what most people would say of themselves. The double standards shown here on this issue are just fucking disgusting.
But see, it wasn't asking a question about the impending war. If it was, it really wouldn't be that big of a deal

It was a STATEMENT that they were ashamed of the President. Now considering that a majority of their audience AGREES with the President, and that his aims basically embody their own, it's also a statement that the Dixie Chicks are ashamed of the POV of the MAJORITY OF THEIR AUDIENCE. Hence the backlash and boycot.
Those upon their soap boxes are overreacting. Those who do not like what the DC did and therefore are not buying their product, aren't. IMO.
Exactly right.
It is more than one man. he is the physical representation of all who share his ideals. Is in not logical for those people who share those ideals to feel insulted?
Exaclty right.
So they are morally OUTRAGED because the Dixie Chicks insulted George Bush? That says everything that anyone needs to know about the state of American politics.
No, they are morally outraged becaues the Dixie Chicks insulted the president who just happens to have largely the same ideas/aims as they do about the Iraqi situation. Hence when the Dixie Chicks insulted the president, they also by extension insulted all their fans that felt similarly to the President. And since a majority of their audience felt similarly to the President, there was a massive backlash against the Dixie Chicks for insulting their audience by proxy.

Dang... I don't think to highly of them, but I do admit that they are attractive...
Not one bit, if they didn't do it for me before I heard their godawful music they sure as hell wouldn't now. Maybe with Implants and paper bags and/or a shitload of alcohol....but maybe not also.

Trent Lott said he wished a racial segregationist ticket had won back during the civil rights era. The Dixie Chicks said that they're ashamed of George Bush. The two attitudes are hardly comparable, and anyone who would insinuate that the latter is remotely as bad as the former is an idiot.
And anyone who reads into the fact that this was a comparison of attitude obviously need lessons in reading. What you quoted included "there are consequences for being visible under the wrong circumstances." (now, it could be me, but where is the insinuation about attitudes?)

But since you asked what the point was, I am happy to reiterate. (Just like math, practice makes perfect) The point was that in both instances, people in highly visible positions which made an ill advised statement. Simple fact, both Lott and the Dixie Chicks would've gone on their marry way if they just watched what they said.

In that context, the comparison is perfectly valid.
