New Evidence Linking al-Qaeda to Iraq
I need to check the Board FAQ!
(sorry, don't know how to dress links, if someone could fix it)
It would be unwise not to regard this with at least some degree of skepticism, given the attempts made to establish such links in the past, but this one looks like it might be genuine.
Fixed it, read the board FAQ. It answers questions like that ~ Stormbringer

Well, I won't deny that Saddam probably gave bin Laden some help, especially considering how much they both hated the U.S. But I am suspicious of claims of their being real buddy buddy. These two are polar opposites, both probably wanting the other dead. Any help given was probably minimal.
If no substancial link is ever discovered between the two, it really won't matter to me because I supported the war for other well established reasons.

The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

We've been looking for WMD for what, a week and a half? It took the UN putzes years and they didn't find anything. We've still got a long time to search for the stuff.

I think, Saddam was working on the prinicple of the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Saddam's smart enough to know that Al-queda is far more focused on the US than they ever would on Iraq. They'd rather have an Arab dictator who pays lip service to Islam than the US.Wicked Pilot wrote:Well, I won't deny that Saddam probably gave bin Laden some help, especially considering how much they both hated the U.S. But I am suspicious of claims of their being real buddy buddy. They won't be going after him any time soon but they are going after the US now so it's safe enough to help them. I doubt it was terribly close but some relations between the two is possible.

Any ties between Saddam and Al-Quaeda are undoubtedly similar to past ties between Saddam and the United States: temporary, arms-length allies of convenience against a common foe, with no real connection in terms of ideology or long-term goals.

Sure man, they had nothing to do with each other. Meetings as far back as five years ago? Means nothing. Al Quaeda fighters in Iraq? They were probably just there on vacation.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! Are you refering to the al-Ansar al-Islam group? They operated in the Kurdish zones and those areas were outside of Saddam's admin.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:Sure man, they had nothing to do with each other. Meetings as far back as five years ago? An interesting article BTW. Perhaps the meeting was just that or perhaps this could be the tip of the iceberg that only time will tell.Durran Korr wrote: It would be unwise not to regard this with at least some degree of skepticism, given the attempts made to establish such links in the past, but this one looks like it might be genuine.

Possibly. Or, it could be some massive buff by Kim Dong Small. But, it could be only the tip of the iceberg. We must face the fact that we really DON'T know what it is. For all we know, he has bought some ex-soviet ICBMs and set up launchers. But, then again, for all we know, all he has is a dirty bomb with a missile that has a 200 mile range.Next of Kin wrote:An interesting article BTW. I'm so using that in my political science class at the next opportunity.
