Went to Church today...
Recently I've been going back to Church (Roman Catholic) in order to hear their interpretation of the Bible. Today the homily was based on the doubting Thomas story. The priest (a weird guy who sounds like a snake) went on and on about the overwhelming evidence in favour of the resurrection. The only specific "evidence" he mentioned was the Shroud of Turin. He dismissed the 1988 carbon dating by saying it was impossible to carbon date cloth and that the fire it was exposed to would have skewed the results...

OK, assume that fire damage makes it impossible to date to date the Shroud (which it doesn't, but assume for the sake of argument). Why assume that the guy it depicts is actually Jesus Christ? Couldn't there have been other guys like him who it depicts? Couldn't it just be a forgery? Why assume that this guy is Jesus without any real evidence for doing so?
Oh, that's right. Because fundies are FUCKING RAGING MORONS.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

He's an idiot. Having faith in the Resurrection is one of the fundementals of Christianity. And if there was overwhelming evidence, he's obviously not faith, now is it?

And to think the priest at my parish was always cracking jokes during the homily...Hobot wrote:Recently I've been going back to Church (Roman Catholic) in order to hear their interpretation of the Bible. They declare the Shroud a fake and then centuries later, they tout is as "evidence for Jesus??"Frank Hipper wrote:It is NOT impossible to carbon date cloth, and being exposed to a fire cannot interfere with carbon 14 dating!
The church didn't even begin to see the damn thing in a favorable light until recently. It was pronounced a fake by them centuries ago.
I don't know whether this is dumb, or just plain laughable.

Well the church needs all the ammunition it can get these days given that most people are not dumb sheep who blindly follow everthing the church says.Simon H.Johansen wrote:They declare the Shroud a fake and then centuries later, they tout is as "evidence for Jesus??"Frank Hipper wrote:It is NOT impossible to carbon date cloth, and being exposed to a fire cannot interfere with carbon 14 dating!
