Fucking XP problems!
Well I just downloaded some patches in Windows Update and now my computer runs like shit! I thought "I'll use Restore." unfortunately one of the problems this update caused was that some windows don't display their contents, including Restore. Other windows such as the Norton Virus Scan doesn't show at all and everything stutters along. On the Internet side, the pulldown navigation menu's on the Archive don't work for me any more (they did last night), and the BBcode here doesn't get integrated into my messages (I see any that are in other peoples posts, but unless I copy and paste them myself, the computer will no longer do it for me) ie, if I right this and want to Italicise something, clicking on the 'i' tab does nothing, same for the smileys.
Any clues as to how to fix this? I thought it might be a Java script problem (one of the updates was for Virtual machine) but some scripts work fine. So can anybody here think of a solution (hold back on the wise cracks - I know i deserve this for running XP in the first place but it came with the machine and I'm too lazy to switch to Linux right now)?

Hmm think I know what it is.
Open crontrol panel, add/remove programs.
Se if you have "Windows Hotfic (sp2) q811493"
Uninstall that one it is a known cause for massive slowdowns.
Read more about it here:
Microsoft Technet
Also there is some known causes with xp and SP1
Technet
Edit
Q811493 Is a security patch so make up your mind security versus speed and do as you please.
I have the fix installed but that is me.
Edit 2 Sigh..

Found a new problem, it doesn't display or load the comtents for Windows update. I uninstalled the Fix you mentioned and it made no difference. So that wasn't it.Rob Wilson wrote:I'll give that a go. And let you know what happens.Faram wrote:

if this doesn't get sorted by tomorrow, I may well just format the drive and start again; as this hatfucker of a useless OS is driving me nuts. There's obviously an error as pages aren't loading, Windows aren't displaying and Java scripts don't run properly, yet no error windows (or maybe they don't work now). I'd restore to the previous setting, but Restore doesn't display either. BAG of SHIT, undocumented, useless, slack programming!
Thanks for trying though.

Neither was I, until the last update. I'd run Virus scan, but apparently that's one of the things that Xp now doesn't like to run. If this were 98 I'd run SFC and try to correct any File errors that way, but I can't find SFC on XP.phongn wrote:This is unusual (I haven't had any problems with WXP)...hmmm...

There's no way in hell I'm installing the next version, with .NEt servers and Palladium on the way, MS can forget my ever using their products again. If I wasn't so lazy I'd install Linux and learn how to use it, but right now I just don't have the time for it.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Maybe WinXP is the WinME for the new millenium..

It might be a BIOS thing.Kelly Antilles wrote:Hey Shep. They don't sell 2k anymore. 2k3 just came out Thursday, so it's not quite ready yet.
And speaking of XP oddities... I'm having to reinstall my driver for the sound card every few days. I can't figure out why it keeps losing it.
Is something like "PnP OS" on or off? If it's on, turn it off. That fixed a problem similar to yours on one of our computers.

Nah, you just have to learn the ins and outs. HDS' copy of XP ran fine for over a year, I hear.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Maybe WinXP is the WinME for the new millenium..
Note: My new comp's hardware had stuff with drivers not initially provided by XP. Now I have something like 30+ things on my add/remove programs list and I've made registry changes.
Still haven't crashed once. But XP is as far as I'll go. The next generation AMD and Intel chips will both support Palladium, just in time for Windows Longhorn. I'll be staying away from those.

W2K3 is for servers and is the successor to W2K Server. Two versions (Datacenter Edition and Enterprise Edition) feature NUMA support, which will be useful for Operton serversKelly Antilles wrote:Hey Shep. They don't sell 2k anymore. 2k3 just came out Thursday, so it's not quite ready yet.

If I had been running W2K, I would have had serious problems when SP3 came out, at one piece of hardware did not play well with it (Promise Ultra100TX2 ATA100 controller).MKSheppard wrote:Do that and install Windows 2000...it's like XP as far as stability is concerned,Rob Wilson wrote: if this doesn't get sorted by tomorrow, I may well just format the drive and start again; as this hatfucker of a useless OS is driving me nuts

Get SP1 for Xp though. It fixes some serious bugs, like the one where if you click a certain internet link or something it could wipe out stuff on your hard drive.Coaan wrote:Never...ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever install xp service patches. EVER.

But nothing farther than SP1.

Why the fuck would you want to get Win2K SP3? All that SP3 has over SP2 is a bunch of spyware and upgrades of dubious quality...phongn wrote:If I had been running W2K, I would have had serious problems when SP3 came out, at one piece of hardware did not play well with it (Promise Ultra100TX2 ATA100 controller).

System File Checker, it's in the System tools on 98. You put your install CD in and any system files that are buggy or reporting errors are overwritten with the originals, that way you can reapply any patches afterward and it tells you which files are fucked. So why they don't have anything similar in XP amazes me.phongn wrote:SFC?Rob Wilson wrote:Neither was I, until the last update. this computer had XP preloaded on it. i've downloaded all of the updates and shit and it runs like crap half of the time. i have the same problem with the restore calander not wanting to come up, but i noticed that it happened after i accidentally downloaded a language pack or somethin. all i know is that after the computer restarted....everything was in like asian or chinese or some kind or writing like that. i figured that screwed everything up seein as how all the problems started after that happened.
Bungeeeeeee!!! Nooooooooo!!!
