Soviet Doomsday Weapon

Post by Admiral Johnason »

I remember hear about a super weapon, created by the Russians during the Cold War, on the History Channel. They way it works is that you would fill a freighter with highly radioactive Plutoanium and send it out to sea. You would then fission as much of it as you could (and remember there are several tons of this stuff going up at once) or simply drudge it through the water and posion the oceans. Could this have actually worked to any extenct?

poisoning the oceans? yes. fissioning as much as possible? yes, but that means lots of small nukes going off simultaneously not one big one.

montcalm: not nuts, just very willing to risk the world. so were the US back then.

It's bullshit.

Plutonium, for one, is not water-soluble (IIRC). There's too much water to irradiate even if it does go into suspension.

The way it supposedly worked is that the USSR had a freighter with one huge salted nuke that would poisen the biosphere if they lost the war. In reality, they settled for nuking most of the world to ensure that the post-War enviornment would have everyone on a roughly equal footing.

Neither the US or the USSR were willing to risk destroying the biosphere.

From what I heard was that it was a big giant VERY DIRTY radio-active bomb. It was designed to go off after all radio signals stopped, and thus annihilate america if we won a Nuke War.

The problem they saw was that in the 90s it would probably break down... which would not be good for anyone.

What could possibly be gained by exploding a bomb in the middle of the ocean or trying to poison it? That plutonium could be used for bombs.

Hint, the History Channel is full of utter bullshit, especially when it comes to any form of "war winning" or super weapon. They'd have you believe Japan could have fielded thousands of jets if the war had lasted a few months longer and that Germany could build weapons not possibul with today's material sciences.

WTF are you talking about? By September, Germany would have had thousands of nuclear missles pointed at the US, supersonic jets and guided missles!

No, it's the History Channel that's full of shit, the Soviets where far too smart to actually attempt something like this.

The idea was that with this device you wouldn't need the bombs, because no one would go nuclear against you.

That's why they didn't build it, it was an idea like the Orion (I think that's it) project where the space ship would drop nukes behind it to launch it into space. Or like with the american version of the concorde where we had the designs, but didn't build it because we saw it was a money drain.

That's one of the reasons why they scrapped the Idea. Though in the way the plan was going to go they would still have their bombs, and would use them too.

Actually, Japan did have a few hundred jet fighters by the end of the war and had 12,000 planes on the line by Augest 6, 1945.

12 000? That's bullshit. And they would have been hacked from the skies by superior plane and piloted P-80s anyway.

The P-80 was actually slower and less manurvable than the Zero. Most of these planes had benn hidden away in preparation for Operation Downfall, but were flight ready at a moments notice.

Moron detected

The Zero was hard pressed to break 350 mph, the P-80 could fly at 580. As for hundreds of Japanses jets, try about twenty of which only a few could fly.
