Construct-a-Kid

Post by Queeb Salaron »

Would it be possible with modern technology to go through cell-by-cell and create a living, breathing child? I mean, if you had enough of the right types of cells to construct a liver, for example, you could theoretically combine those cells in just the right way and create a liver, right? Could you not also do the same to an entire human?

Doesn't sound like something that makes sense to me.

Hahahahaha . . . no.

Seriously, no. We're only now just barely scraping the surface on how to build organs. We're probably at least a century away from being able to do what you're thinking of, if ever.

Yeah, seriously. I mean, what's the point? The old-fashioned method of making humans grow themselves has worked just fine for over 100,000 years. Sure you might move it out of the womb and into a climate-controlled glass jar in the future, but the current method works just fine.

Well, I hope we never aquire this technology. It'd put a price tag on human life. I also do NOT want myself, or my forebearers to have to live in a world where natural procreation is shunned. But that's just me and my paranoia talking.

Hmm, true. And I suppose that if we started mass-producing people, it wouldn't much help the over-population problem, eh?

Slippery slope. The existance of this technology would not necessarily lead to natural reproduction being shunned. It's possible, but it is by no means guaranteed.

I really don't see a reason to produce kids in a lab, as there might be defects in such children if things don't go right. The only use I'd see for it is as a last-resort measure to re-inhabit an area that's lost almost all of it's population, which I don't see likely.

Apparently Xalev didn't see the disclaimer I put: That's just me and my paranoia talking.

I fear many slippery slope futures. Not because I find them likely or even possible, but because I'm a paranoid spaz.

Fortunately, my fears fall away and die as time progresses and I debunk them. :)

I was a very easily frightened child, and I took everything very seriously, odd for a little kid.

I swear a year ago I was one step away from the crazy guy in the shack in the woods building bombs to wipe out the Illuminati.

Ok ok I'm exaggerating, but still.

Make a child cell-by-cell? That's as bad as nanotech enthusiasts who think making a car atom-by-atom is a good idea.

Do you know how just how many cells form an adult human being? There are 10^11 neuron and 10^12 glial cells in the brain alone.

Sure it could be done, but I hope you have a spare millenia or two, overtime will be a bit of a bitch.
