US cell phones in Canada

Post by Col. Crackpot »

are cell phones on a US based network (verizon, cingular etc.) compatable with the Canadian networks? is it just like roaming or will it not work at all?

They are compatible, you just pay an abusrd international fee. I know people who visited Niagra (they are from the US and were on the US side) and used their cell phone. Seems a Canadain cell tower was closer and picked up the call. When they got home they had a massive charge for an international phone call.

that sucks. odd though.... Canada really isn't an international call as far as many land line long distance carriers in the US are concerned. Calling Vancouver is like calling California.

I seem to remember my cell working in Vancouver...

The networks are compatible. My cell works in Michigan and New York.

Einy, why would you post a reply when you have nothing to say, to raise your post count?

It's probably a network thing, some would rather squeeze more cash out of you or just not accept calls from abroad.

As long as the networks run the same mobile standard, I see no reason why they shouldn't work.
But roaming normally costs little fortunes...

Yes. IIRC, the size of that surcharge depends on the company whose cell-phone tower you connect to. It won't bankrupt you, but you might be rudely surprised anyway. I think I paid $5 for a one minute phone call once.

It does depend on the network, seeing as there are three different standards in the US (CDMA, TDMA, GSM)

It's really irritating that the US market still hasn't decided on one standard, whereas most of the world has...
