It needs prominent optronic systems, or it's useless. Here's some inspiration
That's the Ka-50N prototype, with the Shkval EO system relocated to the nose and the FLIR being moutned on the chin.

Dont worry, they're on there way. I'm going to put some bulbous stuff on the front at the sides of the chin gun and possibly above the cockpit area as well. I'm also going to put on a Russian style air data probe off-centre at the nose somewhere and a few other aerials, antennae, collision lights and such to finish it off. That's all small stuff though so it always goes on last.

OK guys, probably one of the final posts in this thread. I've detailed the model somewhat and added decals, antennae, optronics, pilots, an air data probe and fixed one or two other things like making the blades sag when motionless. I've begun trying for a decent statuc beauty shot for the contest though and below are a couple of the attempts so far. The rest were even worse! Let me know if you have any ideas along which lines i should be going with the pics...

Dude, that kicks ass! I love the lighting, and the guns, and the sagging propellers; they're just gorgeous.

Good stuff, but I'd drop the Russian flag on the side.

Why? I figured basically the only former Union state large enough to build or run something like this is Mother Russia.

The first one has too much light, one doesn't see a lot of the model... Try doing a search for pics of aircraft presentations, it might help you the general aspect.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:OK guys, probably one of the final posts in this thread. The second one looks good... very good, the angle of the camera is a tad too shallow, but it depends on the effect you whish to achieve.

Everytime I see this with a weapons load out, all I can think is 'Little Nell'.

Little Nelly, eh? Definitely the best Bond film ever, You Only Live Twice. It had pirhana fish, helicopters, Japanese babes, spaceships and hollowed out volcanoes. And Little nelly too of course.
I've started rendering a little 8 second animation of the Ka-65 flying over some snowy hills which should be finished tomorrow, but does anyone know where I can get some helicopter sound effects from??

And a large library of Helicopter related ones here, plus three little helicopter effects here and a General Effects Library here

I wonder why air-to-air flame throwers never caught on?
Just to prove all you nay-sayers wrong with your prognostications of doom I decided to show you all that not only does this helicopter fly, it's actually quite maneouverable (if a bit twitchy). Look close as it comes past again and you'll even see the chin turret swivel around a bit. It's not my best work, I rendered it at D1 NTSC standard to see how it looks and the timing was all bollocks, so I had to stretch it to the right time in Adone After-Effects. If anyone can put sound to this I'd be grateful, I no longer have any sound editing software on this PC capable of doing this.

It's in DivX 5.03 format, just over 750k - 8 seconds long.

Looks good, though maybe the undercarriage could be retracted. Looking at it, I have to say that 'Hatchet' fits it to a tee as a NATO codename, small and capable of doing lots of damage in the right hands.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:I wonder why air-to-air flame throwers never caught on?

I looked at retractable gear early on and dismissed it as a luxury not required on an attack chopper of this type. It's not like it's stealthy in any way, and the drag from the weapons must be quite bad anyway. Choppers aren't noted for their speed either, so I dismissed it. Having said that I think it would make for a cool animation of a take-off if I have it lift off in a cloud od dust and the wheels swing up out of the way once it gets a little airborne. The wheels will just be recessed or held up out of the way like a duck, no room for fancy doors and pods on this thing.

OK guys, here it is in glorious technicolour with retracting undercarriage and sound effects included. I'll have to remodel the wheels properly tomorrow, basically build a recess for the nosewheel and cut a couple of small slots for the rear ones, but nothing too complex. the wheels will just be held up out of the way 'Joe 90 Flying Car' style and not actually housed anywhere, there simply isn't room
It's about 800k, DivX again...

Nice work on the Undercarriage slcking off as it lifts, and the Sensor package on the side of the turret (though it will get blinded by the gun firing, which is why they are normally set away from the guns axis), Perhaps a ball system set just above the cockpit - in the area of the black line - just to be different and to give it a good hull down fire position if needed.Kenny_10_Bellys wrote:OK guys, here it is in glorious technicolour with retracting undercarriage and sound effects included.
