What the hell has happened to rock music?

Out of all the relatively 'new' bands (note - I do NOT spell it with a u), I have to nominate Sum 41 for being good (although not highly original, bah! Who needs originality?) - Rain in Pain, for example, is bloody good classic metal of Megadeth / WASP quality.

Damn you all for not mentioning the best rock tune of them all:
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
Used to scare the shit of my grandmom with this one
And for new rock:
Hammerfall
Metal really but who cares

The problem is that Rock music has been going strong for so long it's running out of ideas. Rock outlived disco, regge, pop etc. What we have today is not pop the way pop used to be. The other major problem is todays generation. While people my age have spurned the church and authority they will sit there and be spoon fed the shit that MTV feeds them. You can't beat a media whore band when it comes to selling music.
On the note of Sum 41, what works for them is the guitar player in the band. That guy is fucking amazing in the rifts he plays, he could easily fit into any classic rock band and play with them note for note. Take him away and they are a cheap rip of Dog Eat Dog.

I hated Sum 41 at first but I have to admit they have a great sense of humor. I laughed my ass off when I saw that Strokes parody they did.

Slayer still own ass, metal wise at least.
Sum 41 are a good band, play their instruments well, but their songs still suck ass.
as for "black sabbath are just noise" i would guess you've not heard them, nor heard real noise.
OH and wasn't elvis blues?

I have only heard the new single from PM5000, and I don't like it, but the rest of the CD may be good.
Out of the relatively new bands that I like is Disturbed(accually their my favorite band) They sound good live and that guy can really do all those sounds in his songs(although he's not doing them anymore, he had to have surgury on his vocal cords cause stomach acid would come up from his stomach and rest on them while he slept)
It's too bad the singer from Drowning Pool died, I liked them.

As dirty as it makes me feel, I've got to agree with Capt. Shrimp on this one. The vast majority of people that bitch about rap (and Eminem in particular) are the same guys that never care for anything outside a few classic rock bands. They hate him for being a sucess and for being a star in way rock has lacked since the 70s.GrandAdmiralPrawn wrote:And people who rip hard on Eminem are basically disgruntled rock dudes who wish their pet genre still had a talent/personality like that around. Rock is about as controversial and threatening these days as vanilla pudding.
Eminem has talent. His new ablum is actually pretty good with some moments of real music greatness. Not many but they're coming out. I think, given time, he could really do something.
Well it's always been that way. We just remember the good stuff. No year has more than a handfull of really good music. Everyone in the last 50 years has said that about the major radio stations .Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi wrote:I think Linkin Park is Limp Bizkit without the explitives. In other words, nothing.
I'd say the overall quality of rock music nowadays has gone down, thanks to untalented artists and radio stations that play them ad nauseum, but there are a few acts out there that sound good.
For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew
From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue;

Picked up a couple albums today...and realized that rock isn't all that badly off, you just wouldn't know it if all you do is listen to radio and MTV. Picked up "Interzone Mantras" by The Tea Party and "Gravity" by Our Lady Peace, and both are surprisingly good.
"Interzone" gets zero radio airplay so you'd never know about it, but the songs rock, unique melodies, good playing, and makes me wanna play air instruments along with the songs. They rock. Also has one of the coolest album covers around.
"Gravity", kind of a strange album, the one single ("Somewhere out there") they play on the radio all the time is IMO one of the worst songs on the album. The albums strengths are in the slower more depressing songs like "Bring Back the Sun", which I think is the highlight of the album. It has beautiful melodies and haunting lyrics, and it also rocks out pretty good in the guitar solo.

As hard as it is for me to say this, Eminem is starting to grow on me, some is rather catchy in a good way.
"Oh no, oh yeah, tell me how can it be so fair
That we dying younger hiding from the police man over there
Just for breathing in the air they wanna leave me in the chair
Electric shocking body rocking beat streeting me to death"

"I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

I hate rap. I don't care if Eminem has talent or if he makes a lot of money or if he's got eleven toes. I hate rap.
Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.

I actually didn't think Black Sabbath was that heavy. Bach - "Adagio In C Major," BWV 564. Now that's a heavy song. Or even "Ich Ruf' Zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ," BWV 639Aeolus wrote:I agree that Metallica has talent. But in my opinion Black Sabath just loud noise. Way to heavy metal for me. At least you can dance (not just thrash around) to Linkin Park.
Too true. Music died in 1750 with J. S. Bach. Prog Rock/Metal is heavily based on the Baroque era. And if you really want musical proof i can provide it.Next of Kin wrote:We need a return to 80s era progressive rock...
he he, that's right. "Nu-[insert style]" is crap, i.e. nu-metal: limp bizkit, slipnot, staind, linkin park...the list goes on. They don't have the right to be placed in the same sentence as the real metal acts. Note: Staind only refer to themselves as rock, but the general public seems obsessed with called them "nu-metal." Note again: There was one song of limp bizcut i liked, "no sex" i thought i was really good.innerbrat wrote:Out of all the relatively 'new' bands (note - I do NOT spell it with a u)...

Even some of the virtuosso acts are worth a listen. EVH, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, John Petrucci etc...
There is some music i like. There is some i don't like but can appreciate. Then there is the music that i hate and also have no appreciation for at all. Among those being most rap, pop, doof, hip hop, and all nu-music.

My own opinion on Nu-Metal is a bit mixed - on the other hand, it's keeping the metal tradition alive in the general public's consciousness... on the other hand, all the really good metal bands are either fading into obscurity, or will never become truly recognized. (Mind you, Some of them have good reasons to stay underground!)

Nu-Metal is pounding out shitty riffs tuned down to A, the singer growling, and incredibly stupid lyrics. Slipknot and Mudvayne are the greatest offenders.
Rock died with the release of Black Album. Rock died when Dave Mustaine's arm turned to shit. Rock died with Randy Rhoads. Rock died when Slash left Guns n' Roses. There are bands fighting for the survival of metal and rock. Well known bands such as AC/DC, and KISS, and the ultimate savior of metal: Iced Earth. <Orgasms at the sound of Iced Earth> And local bands such as the Addison, IL based Ice Titan, are still trying to spark metal and rock from it's fading embers into a roaring flame once again. http://www.icetitan.cjb.net
Hell, even punk rock has turned to shit. Compare the Misfits and the Ramones to shit like Blink 182 and Sum 41.

So has anyone heard of Nickelback?
They're a fairly recent band; their debut album came out in 2000. I think the quality of their music is pretty good, but what about you guys?

As far as Nickelback go, I think they're relatively harmless soft-rock/pop, but I can't listen to an entire album.

Ahh, the travesty! I absolutely ADORE Evanescence, and that song kicks major fuckin' ass. I don't know how I would classify their music, but I know it rocks. If you ever download the song, the guy in it isn't normally in the group--the chick (Amy somebody) has an awesome voice, and I love the sound the band has. Very cool.
Where do you live that your stations won't play it?

I too, embarassing as it is, also agree with the seafood on this one. Popular rock is currently in a no-talent tailspin. To get one's fix of good music, one either has to stay stuck in the '70s, go indie (and there are undoubtedly a lot of really good local bands in your area that could use your support, so quit yer bitching about the sorry state of popular rock and go support them!), or look to other genres.Stormbringer wrote:As dirty as it makes me feel, I've got to agree with Capt. And Eminem isn't that bad. His music tends to be an astonishing mix of shock, shlock, biting satire, and raw emotion. Just because the man probably couldn't play an actual instrument to save his life doesn't mean that he lacks talent.

Nickleback irritate me incredibly. Corny riffs, irritating vocals, ugly vocalist....the list goes on. Plus "How you remind me" was overplayed to fuck and made me want to sink the world somehow.Crayz9000 wrote:So has anyone heard of Nickelback?

Dull, boring band, low end of mediocre.
Of course, there's no accounting for taste.
As for rap...the only rap we need is grandmaster flash, the fresh prince of bel airopening theme, Onyx, Run DMC, Public Enemy, and BIOHAZARD.
