That's stupid; you buy lottery tickets with after-tax money, the winnings should be tax-free. Canadian lotteries are tax-free; if you win $15 million, you take home a $15 million cheque. What you see is what you get; I don't understand why American lotteries play this bullshit game of splitting the winnings up over a period of decades years and taxing back half of it. They make the winnings look like a lot more than they really are by doing that (adding up annual amortization payments and ignoring the effect of interest is the height of dishonesty, and I'm surprised no one has ever sued them for it).

Yeech...taxes always suck.

And for Vympel...I know all too well(I had to specifically take Tax Law...because my employer, an EA[Enrolled Agent]...wants me to up to spec on this stuff) Oh jeebus, my head is hurting again.

As for Death and taxes...the best part I love is DYING doesn't let you escape this Bullshit...nope the IRS can still pursue you when you are COLD IN THE GROUND!!!!!!!!!
Kelly wrote:I'm pretty sure middle class America pays much more in taxes than all of Canada put together. We get screwed.
Yes we do...holy shit...the amount things one has to do to make sure those grubby bastards don't get as much of my money(I have too many things to keep particulars off)

Like Fanboy pointed out...lottery tax does indeed blow...but the ABSOLUTE SHITTEST TAXES COME FROM STATES...why you may ask?

Aside from being bitch and half to do them...THEY ARE THE MOST FUCKING STICKLIERS FOR BULLSHIT LAWS IN THIS COUNTRY!!!

They have assbackwards means of proving your income comes from here...and fucking forbid you goddamn have any source of income from somewhere else...jesus fucking christ you have to go through(well maybe not you...) to make the paperwork correct. Then When all is said and done you may still owe because you didn't know about Byle 26, or some shit that was passed 10/12/03 because you don't live in the goddamn state where your income may have come from because it's next to you(by the way...I hate Maryland's Tax law towards out of state income...reporting is beyond a bitch)

That said...sucks to hear about you owing...I feel for Kelly and anyone who does keep up and OWES...because I deal with dipshits who have the brains of a canary and NEVER owe because they get lucky by some means I can only call the LACK of natural selection.

What percentage of your income do you actually see?

Say you make 75K a year, what is your net income? 55K? Less?

This is after taxes, retirement funds, etc...

Seriously depends upon on small factor, what does your country bracket such people.

If you're making around 75K here...this shoot you up in the 30%+ ...meaning to NOT OWE you need to shunt away 30%+ of your paycheck to the Feds(not counting everything else) after retirement and etc...it gets a little evil.

The state's don't follow this to a tee...and the extras can rip a paycheck apart, DEPENDING upon company policy of what goes where.

To get the most out of return...you need to breakdown virtually everything you spend.

Current estimates for Toronto's losses are into the billions as well. And Quebec's damage was partially due to a failure to mitigate. Their hydro poles aren't sunk deep enough into the ground, and their electrical infrastructure is not robust. Quebec Hydro is a poorly run joke.
Toronto's had little, and as he said, the economic effect is across Canada, in Vancouver, Montreal, etc...
Perhaps you don't read the paper, but only Toronto was nailed with a travel advisory. Even the other Canadian provinces treated Torontonians as pariahs. A crisis like this lets you know who your friends are, and what we discovered was that the rest of Canada is not just ribbing us when they say they hate us. They really do hate us, and they enjoyed seeing us suffer. Fuck them and fuck the donkeys they rode in on.

You CANNOT judge what the effect of the SARS warning has had on Toronto.

Much of it could be from Canada's refusal to go along with the Yankee's.

There is no actual, hard facts that say Toronto lost billions of dollars in revenue. Quebec lost all those hydro poles, that is evidence that damage was done. A downturn in tourism is NOT evidence, as it could just be the normal fluctuations in the tourism industry.

And why are you one of those fools who thinks the Fed's should pay up for everything?

The whole reason SARS got so big was because of the Tories here in the province. Blame then, dont go asking the feds for money. Compare Toronto to Vancouver. Both got SARS cases. Vancouver, with a FUNCTIONING health care system, clamped down on it. Toronto's don existant system allowed SARS to spread like wildfire. In fact, the state of the system was what spread SARS from hospital to hospital.

If you want a better example, look at Hanoi compared to Toronto.

Every time some asshole in Washington, Ottawa, London, or anywhere else gets a bright idea, the middle class had better be ready to drop its pants and grab its ankles. If election day was the same as tax day, everyone would be a libertarian.

I don't look forward to next year taxes when I get a year round job that pays me a good sum of money and then have my income raised by about $2700 because they tack my NM Lottery scholarship onto my yearly income.

It really annoys me too to see a lot of these assholes who find loopholes in the system, the poor welfare fucks who never attempt to whim themselves of the government handouts, and scholarship money whores (the people that get lots of scholarships or grants and use the money to buy DVD players and big screen TV's) who alway puts more and more burden on the middle class to carry them and protest and bitch if they're not given their 'entitled' handout.

50% by some estimates.

And 30% of that tax money is outright wasted or lost.

I'm probably going to make enough money from my summer job this year so that I'll have to pay taxes, so I guess can sympathize, even if it's just a bit.

And I'm just wondering, what are the tax-gathering departments in England and Canada called?
Don't hate; appreciate!

Bullshit. I suppose it was just a coincidence that people started cancelling events like mad after this SARS outbreak even though the war in Iraq started many weeks ago
There is no actual, hard facts that say Toronto lost billions of dollars in revenue. Quebec lost all those hydro poles, that is evidence that damage was done. A downturn in tourism is NOT evidence, as it could just be the normal fluctuations in the tourism industry.
You are either blind or stupid. I have seen normally busy restaurants which are COMPLETELY FUCKING EMPTY and the massive business drop-off just HAPPENED to precisely coincide with the SARS outbreak. Do you have a better explanation? Or are you going to settle for "coincidence?"
And why are you one of those fools who thinks the Fed's should pay up for everything?
We pay all of the goddamned bills for the whole fucking country; it's about time we got some back.

Don't be a political opportunist asshole and blame tax cuts; more doctors would not have slowed this thing down because the problem was attitude and awareness, not staff shortages. But once the damage is done, I don't see why Quebec gets the better part of a billion dollars while we get diddly squat, even though we pay all of this fucking money INTO the government.
If you want a better example, look at Hanoi compared to Toronto.
So? No one said the minister of health wasn't an idiot and shouldn't be fired. But Quebec was negligent in the ice storm as well, and I didn't see anyone witholding money because of it.

People freaked out for no real reason. And that's coming from someone with a history in spread-of-disease control.

Me, I went to Toronto just last week (sorry Mike, would have dropped in to buy you a beer if I'd had the time), and it was a ghost town. Up here, dozens of meetings were cancelled among business groups because they didn't want people from Toronto coming to Ottawa during the SARS scare.

People being as paranoid as they are, I bet the damage to Toronto isn't over yet, even with incoming government subsidies.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Here in NYC Chinatown is deserted. You don't see the throngs you usually see walking through teh area and the restaurants are empty. They've started to let go wait staff and as I understand it the restaurants in Chinatown account for 20% of the area's employment.

Its not a good thing. I went down there to have dinner on the spur of the moment a week ago and I was alone with my friend in the entire restaurant, a restauramt BTW that used to have LINES to get in just a few months ago when I was last there.

Its not a joke, Chinatown business leaders are BEGGING NYC politicos and even the Clintons to please come down and show some support. Bloomberg will probably do nothing except talk, he's into pissing on downtown these days. Go figure.
