Irradiated Foods
Who here would or would not eat food that was irradiated to remove harmful bacteria? Why or Why not?

I eat it, but that doesn't mean that I'm not concerned about the irradiation process itself.
Have there been any studies of whether the irradiation process can alter the protein structure of the food?

Possibly, any radiation will affect chemical bonds given the right frequency and power, proteins are usually more adept at surviving UV at least and heat in some cases.Crayz9000 wrote:I eat it, but that doesn't mean that I'm not concerned about the irradiation process itself.

The military has been irradiating all of its food since the early 1950's.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:They've been doing it for years, so I don't have a problem with it.

Nice to see you said the exact same thing I did.Death from the Sea wrote:The military has been irradiating all of its food since the early 1950's.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:They've been doing it for years, so I don't have a problem with it.

Re: Irradiated Foods
Oh hell yes I'd eat irradiated food. Let me tell you, spewing hydrochloric acid out both ends of one's ailimentary canal on the account of food poisoning is not fun! So bring on the radiation and kill those bacteria dead.Death from the Sea wrote:Who here would or would not eat food that was irradiated to remove harmful bacteria? Why or Why not?

If bombarding food with low energy radiation is dangerous then we might as well pack up our stuff and move to a cave. You know, just incase someone realises that the sun is pumping out enough radiation such that without the atmosphere we'd all fry in a millisecond.DftS wrote:Who here would or would not eat food that was irradiated to remove harmful bacteria? Seriously, I irradiate my fucking skull every time i use a 900MHz phone, or site in front of my computer screen. There are nuclear reactors that put out less radiation then my monitor here. Irradiated food isnt something to worry about.

Irradiation is the lesser of two evils in this particular case.

I fine with it, and far more concerned with the other toxins and carcinogen's I've been exposed to.

So far as I know, MRE's are irradiated and I've been eating those for years. I don't particularly like them, but the reasoning has to do with taste (or lack thereof) rather than irradiation of them....Death from the Sea wrote:Who here would or would not eat food that was irradiated to remove harmful bacteria? Are MREs and K-rations the same thing?jegs2 wrote:So far as I know, MRE's are irradiated and I've been eating those for years. I don't particularly like them, but the reasoning has to do with taste (or lack thereof) rather than irradiation of them....

Re: Irradiated Foods
No, K-rats come in tins and are more alike to the old "C-Rations," except that they are made to serve many soldiers instead of just one. The introduction of K-rats into a field enviornment previously dominated by only MRE's can result in a dramatic increase in unit morale (they generally taste better), although the newer MRE's are much more tasty than the old "dark-brown bag" MRE's.Queeb Salaron wrote:Are MREs and K-rations the same thing?
